JJ King, who also writes as Janice Godin, is a USA Today bestselling romance author from Newfoundland. She has said she grew up on fairy tales and the pull of the ocean, and that mix of old-story magic and coastal grit still shows up in the way she writes, even when the setting is full of wolves, gods, or time travel.
Wolves were always going to find their way in.
Before readers knew her for academy shifters and fated mates, she was publishing contemporary romance as Janice Godin. Books like Then She Danced, Then She Sang, and Then She Dreamed gave her space to write grounded love stories shaped by place, family, and emotional messiness. That earlier work matters because it explains a lot about her later paranormal books. The creatures changed, but her interest in relationships under pressure did not.
Over time, she moved further into paranormal romance and urban fantasy, and by her own account she kept coming back to wolf shifters because they were her happy place. She has also pointed to Kelley Armstrong's Bitten as a big influence, especially its alpha female energy and its take on pack life. That influence makes sense once you get into her catalog. King likes power struggles, hidden rules, and heroines who have to learn what they can survive.
That line runs through The Guardians, one of her earlier wolf-world series. Those books mix family loyalty, pack leadership, prophecy, and danger, all anchored by Katherine LaFlamme and the trouble gathering around her pack. Later, New Moon opened up Alpha Wolf Academy, where Elena Jensen is dropped into an elite shifter university and finds out very quickly that fitting in is the least of her problems.
She likes putting her characters under pressure and seeing what they do next.
That is just as true in Wolf Mated and the wider Beta Wolf Academy story, where Lexi has to deal with a new school, a painful past, and three best-friend wolves who make life much more complicated. It is there again in Wolf Shattered, which takes her wolf world in a darker direction with trafficking, criminal networks, and a rejected-mate setup. Readers who click with King usually like that balance of romance and threat. Her books tend to give you attraction, yes, but also hierarchy, danger, and people making hard choices while their feelings get in the way.
She does not stay in one lane, either. In Medusa and Hecate, she turns to Greek mythology and gives familiar names a sharper paranormal-romance edge. In Reigning Magicks, written with Candace Osmond, she folds druids, time travel, and forbidden magic into a story that still feels very much in her wheelhouse. Whether the setting is a wolf academy or a magical future, she keeps circling the same ideas: power, loyalty, identity, and the cost of love.
King has also been part of the writing community in Newfoundland, including helping spark Literary Events NL, which brought local authors onto a summer library tour. These days she continues to write from Newfoundland under both names, moving between contemporary romance, paranormal romance, and fantasy. Through all of it, the common thread is pretty clear, she likes strong women, messy bonds, and worlds where danger is never far from the kiss.
