Series background & context
Jim Rains arrives as the kind of protagonist who ought to be in control. He is good at tracking people, good at pressure, and used to dealing with the rougher side of the criminal world. That makes Cold Rains interesting right away, because the first serious threat to his balance is not framed as a mastermind with an army behind her. It is Melissa Sossville.
Melissa is the series hook. Wier introduces her as beautiful, slight, and absolutely capable of getting her way, even when the law is lined up against her. That sets the tone for the whole Jim Rains corner of the bibliography. This is not a gentle procedural. It is a cat-and-mouse story built around attraction, manipulation, criminal intelligence, and the unnerving fact that the most dangerous person in the room may not look dangerous at all.
Because there is only one Jim Rains book in this set, the page works best as an introduction to a character and a mood. Jim feels like a hard-driving investigator or enforcer type, the sort of man who has handled bad people before and expects to keep doing it. Melissa gives that confidence something sharp to crash against.
The appeal, then, is less about a cozy case file and more about power. Who is really controlling the scene? Who is using whom? How much of the danger is physical, and how much of it comes from obsession, bad judgment, or simple underestimation? Those are strong thriller questions, and Cold Rains seems happy to push them.
If you like lean crime fiction with a dangerous central pairing, this page is a promising stop. Jim Rains offers a protagonist who knows violence and pursuit, but the series gets its voltage from the fact that his greatest problem may be a woman he cannot dismiss and cannot quite get ahead of.
