Author bio

Jillian Hunter was born in Scotland and spent her earliest years in a three-story late Georgian house bought by her grandmother after World War II. It was a lively family setting, with winding stairs, servants' quarters, and a dumb waiter that Hunter remembers helping to operate while she worked alongside the housemaids.

Her family history gave her plenty of strong characters before she ever created fictional ones. Her grandmother had worked as an emergency nurse in Wales during the Blitz and supported the Free French. Her Welsh mother had left school at fourteen to work as a switchboard operator during the war. Hunter's father, an American Coast Guard intelligence and executive officer in Europe, was also a writer of maritime law.

Reading was always part of the picture.

The family moved to London when Hunter began school, then later relocated to America. Looking back, she remembers reading in the garden while her father worked on his writing, a quiet example that stayed with her. She earned a BA in French and once intended to return to London to pursue Shakespearean acting.

Life took a different turn when she met a bass player in a band on a Friday the thirteenth. He quoted The Taming of the Shrew, acquired the nickname Beast, and became her husband. Hunter has written warmly about their long marriage and their three daughters.

Her first novel, Heart of the Storm, arrived in 1985. It began a career built around historical romance, especially stories set in Scotland and England, where stubborn heroines, complicated families, old secrets, and dangerous misunderstandings have plenty of room to collide.

Scotland keeps turning up in her earlier books. A Deeper Magic pairs a skeptical Victorian doctor with a woman learning the healing arts on a remote island. Fairy Tale brings a troubled Scottish laird home to a crumbling castle and a fearless young woman who mistakes him for an enemy. In Indiscretion, two former lovers are sent back to the Highlands by Queen Victoria to investigate a suspicious death.

Then came the Boscastles.

Beginning with The Seduction of an English Scoundrel, the long-running Regency series follows the unruly Boscastle family through weddings, espionage, scandal, revenge, schools for young ladies, and romances with people they absolutely did not plan to love. The books tend to mix playful banter with a mystery or threat that gives each couple something more immediate to solve. Later connected stories include the Bridal Pleasures books and the Boscastle Affairs novels, such as The Mistress Memoirs and The Countess Confessions.

Hunter's books have appeared on major bestseller lists and have been published in multiple languages. She also received the Romantic Times Career Achievement Award for Historical Love and Laughter, which fits the balance of humor and heat found throughout her work.

She has described herself as someone who likes people who make her laugh. That preference shows up on the page. Her romances make room for rakish dukes and high-stakes secrets, but also for unruly relatives, awkward schemes, and heroines who refuse to behave as expected.
