Author bio
Jessie Keane writes hard‑hitting crime stories and family sagas set in and around London’s underworld, and has become a familiar name to readers who like their fiction gritty, fast and emotional.
She was born in Hampshire in southern England, in a traditional Romany caravan parked in her parents’ garden. Her family were well‑off at first thanks to a successful business, but that comfort vanished when the firm collapsed, leaving them broke and pushing the household into turmoil.
Growing up was rough. Keane has spoken about being scared of older brothers who bullied and stole, the rows that followed, and the strain that helped drive her father into an early grave. At fifteen she ran away to Soho and the East End, changing her identity and scraping by in a run of casual, dead‑end jobs while she fell in love with the noise and shadows of the city.
Writing was the constant thread. As a child she scripted puppet shows for school, winning small prizes and getting used to seeing her words performed. As an adult she kept finishing full‑length novels and sending them to agents, only to collect silence or polite rejection, then go back to whatever work would pay the bills.
By her own account, those years were hard. Twice divorced and living alone in a bare council flat with no money for heating, she wrote in a winter coat and gloves, telling herself that if she was ever going to chase the dream properly, it had to be now. She sold her wedding dress, bought first a typewriter and then a second‑hand computer, and decided to give crime fiction one last, serious try.
The turning point came one night under a duvet, watching a documentary about the Kray twins. She started to imagine a fearless woman moving through those big organised gangs of the nineteen‑sixties, with her own code and her own secrets. Out of that picture came Annie Bailey, later Annie Carter, and the first novel, Dirty Game, which she wrote in just a few months.
Keane sent the manuscript to a handful of agents, half‑expecting more rejection. Instead, one agent asked for changes, sent it on, and soon rang back with news of a three‑book deal from a major publisher. Dirty Game launched her career and introduced readers to Annie’s world of East End pubs, brothels and power struggles, followed by more novels including Black Widow, Scarlet Women, Playing Dead, Ruthless, Stay Dead and the later sequel Never Go Back.
Alongside Annie’s story she created Ruby Darke, a mixed‑race shop girl who grows into a retail magnate in Nameless, Lawless and The Edge. Those books stretch from wartime streets to glossy department stores and back‑alley deals, exploring family loyalty, class, identity and the cost of getting what you think you want.
Keane has also written a string of stand‑alone gangland and psychological thrillers such as Jail Bird, The Make, Dangerous, Fearless, The Knock, The Manor, Diamond and Dead Heat. Whatever the setting – bare‑knuckle boxing camps, glamorous casinos, or country houses with secrets – her stories usually centre on outsiders, especially women, who find out how ruthless they can be when survival is on the line.
These days she divides her time between Hampshire and London, still drawing on Romany roots, old London haunts and the characters she once met on the fringes of the underworld. Her books are direct, fast and steeped in place, and she seems happiest when she is back at the keyboard, pushing another family of crooks and survivors into even deeper trouble.
