Once a celebrated pediatric surgeon, ex-con Blair Harbour is barely staying afloat when her former cellmate begs for help finding a missing daughter. Teaming up with LAPD detective Jessica Sanchez and a dangerous crime boss, Blair plunges into Los Angeles’s underworld to save a girl no one else will search for.
Series background & context
The Jessica Sanchez books move Candice Fox’s crime world to Los Angeles, where palm trees and freeways sit alongside gang territories and uneasy squad rooms. Detective Jessica Sanchez has built a career on persistence and sharp instincts, but those same qualities have made her unpopular inside the LAPD.
In Gathering Dark, her life becomes even more complicated when a grateful victim leaves her a multimillion-dollar mansion as thanks for catching a killer. The windfall turns Jessica into a pariah among colleagues who resent her sudden wealth and question her ethics. While she’s fending off internal politics and thinly veiled threats, an old case comes back to knock on her door.
Blair Harbour, once a respected pediatric surgeon, has just been released from prison after serving time for a murder Jessica helped put on her record. Blair is working nights at a gas station and trying to earn back partial custody of her son when her former cellmate Sneak begs for help finding a missing teenage daughter. With nowhere else to turn, Blair shows up on Jessica’s doorstep asking the detective who once arrested her to join the search.
What follows is a rough alliance between four women on different sides of the law: Blair, terrified of being sent back inside; Sneak, a chronic liar and thief; Ada Maverick, a ruthless gang boss with her own reasons to get involved; and Jessica, whose badge is both a shield and a target. Their hunt for the missing girl drags them through strip clubs, back alleys, quiet suburbs and the rarefied world of wealthy collectors, exposing how violence cuts across class lines.
Jessica’s cases are as much about loyalty and reputation as they are about clues. She has to decide when to follow LAPD procedure and when to trust her own moral compass, especially as she begins to doubt whether Blair truly deserved the sentence she received years earlier. The police politics are messy, and Jessica’s inherited mansion is both a sanctuary and a symbol that keeps putting a target on her back.
This series leans into character drama as much as mystery. Readers who like morally complicated detectives, found-family dynamics and a strong sense of place will find plenty to enjoy in Jessica’s Los Angeles, where alliances shift quickly and every favour comes with a cost.
