Breaking the Dark

by Lisa Jewell

2024

Jessica Jones is hired by a mother who claims her twins returned from a trip to the UK behaving strangely perfect. Jones travels to a remote village to investigate, uncovering a sinister plot behind their transformation.

Series background & context

The Marvel Crime line represents a fascinating experiment in genre fiction, taking street-level heroes and handing them over to established masters of mystery and suspense. For this particular installment, the creative reins are handed to Lisa Jewell, an author best known for unraveling the dark, uncomfortable secrets of seemingly normal families. It is a crossover that blends the grit of comic book noir with the psychological nuance of a modern British thriller.

Jessica Jones has never been a typical superhero. She doesn’t wear a cape, she prefers cheap whiskey to protein shakes, and she operates out of a messy office in Hell’s Kitchen rather than a high-tech headquarters. She is a private investigator first and a super-powered individual second, usually dealing with cheating spouses, missing persons, and the general grime of New York City. She is cynical, abrasive, and deeply reluctant to get involved in anything that smells like heroics.

But this mystery drags her far away from the familiar shadows of the concrete jungle.

The case begins with a client who brings Jessica a problem that sounds almost wonderful on paper. A wealthy mother is concerned about her teenage twins. They spent the summer abroad in the United Kingdom and have returned home completely changed. They aren't rebellious, moody, or acting out. In fact, they are polite, well-dressed, and impeccably behaved.

They are perfect. And that is exactly what makes them so terrifying.

To find out what happened to the real versions of these children, Jessica must travel to the source of the transformation: a small, idyllic village known as Barton Wallop. It looks like a postcard of the British countryside, full of thatched cottages, green lawns, and polite neighbors. However, the private investigator quickly realizes that the picturesque surface is hiding something deeply rotten.

The story leans heavily into a "fish out of water" dynamic. Seeing a cynical, leather-jacket-wearing New Yorker navigate the polite social codes of a secretive English village adds a layer of dry humor to the rising tension. It forces the character to rely on her instincts and detective skills rather than just her super strength.

Jewell applies her signature touch to the Marvel universe by focusing on psychological horror rather than cosmic threats. This grounds the superhero elements in a reality that feels dangerous and intimate. By merging the hard-boiled American detective genre with the eerie atmosphere of a domestic suspense novel, the narrative offers a fresh, grounded look at a fan-favorite character.
