Jesmeen Kaur Deo Books in Order

Jesmeen Kaur Deo grew up in northern British Columbia, Canada, where she spent much of her childhood daydreaming. She later brought that imaginative streak to young adult fiction, writing about teenagers whose private worries collide with the expectations of school, family, friends, and community.

Deo loves books that can make a reader laugh and tug at the heartstrings in the same paragraph. Her work makes room for both. It pairs romance and quick dialogue with questions about beauty rules, self-worth, family pressure, and what happens when people decide they know someone before hearing their side of the story. That balance lets the books stay warm and funny even when a character is dealing with embarrassment, fear, or a difficult choice.

She writes for teens who need to see their messy questions treated seriously.

Her first novel, TJ Powar Has Something to Prove, arrived in 2022. It follows TJ, a popular debater who stops removing her body hair after a meme mocks the way her Sikh cousin looks, then turns her decision into a public debate about beauty. The premise gives Deo room for humor, rivalry, friendship, and romance, but the center of the book is TJ’s changing relationship with herself. It asks why certain standards get treated as normal, and who gets hurt by them.

The novel was a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard selection and an Indie Next Pick. It was also shortlisted for the Amy Mathers Teen Book Award and the German Youth Literature Prize. More importantly, it gives TJ room to be smart, stubborn, unsure, and still worthy of affection, without turning self-acceptance into an easy fix.

Then Deo took her next story into much more dangerous territory.

Her second YA novel, Reasons We Break, followed in 2025. It centers on Simran, a high-achieving young woman in a Punjabi immigrant community, and Rajan, someone that community has long warned her to avoid. When Rajan’s former gang tries to force him back, Simran agrees to handle its books in an effort to keep him out of prison. The setup puts a forbidden romance inside a tense story about loyalty, pressure, and the cost of protecting someone. The novel received the 2026 Mathical Book Prize.

Across these two books, Deo writes teenagers facing social rules that carry real weight. Her characters worry about how they look, what others say, who they might disappoint, and whether they can ask for more. Romance matters, but so do cousins, parents, classmates, and community ties. She keeps the big questions close to daily life.

Away from the page, Deo has mentioned biking, playing the harmonium, and struggling to open jars. She lives in Ontario and continues to work on new books. It is a fittingly down-to-earth picture of a writer who makes room for humor alongside hard conversations.
