Author bio
Jerry S. Eicher was born into the Amish community at Aylmer, Ontario, and his early life gave him the material that would shape nearly everything he later wrote. He spent his first school years there, then moved with his family to Honduras, where an Amish settlement was trying to build a life far from its Canadian roots. That mix of old-order tradition, frontier hardship, and cultural change stayed with him.
He knows this world from the inside.
In his memoir My Amish Childhood, Eicher writes about those years in Ontario and Honduras, the strain of returning to North America, his struggle with stuttering, and the long spiritual questions that eventually led him away from the Amish faith. That background helps explain why his fiction often feels less like a tourist visit and more like lived experience. His books are interested in the quiet rules, family pressures, and private hopes that shape everyday Amish life.
Writing started early. In grade school he wrote fiction and even won recognition in a writing contest, which was a small but real nudge in the right direction. Years later, after teaching for two terms in Amish and Mennonite schools in Ohio and Illinois, he kept writing while also preaching, leading Bible studies, and working in church renewal. His first novel, A Time To Live, was self-published and drew strongly on his own background. It helped open the door to a fiction career.
Then came the books that made many readers know his name.
His early Sarah books and the widely read Adams County novels, beginning with Rebecca's Promise, brought him to a much bigger audience. From there he went on to write series such as Little Valley, Hannah's Heart, Fields of Home, and Emma Raber's Daughter. Readers who pick up A Wedding Quilt for Ella, Katie Opens Her Heart, or Miriam's Secret tend to find the same things: close family ties, courtship under pressure, grief that does not vanish neatly, and faith treated as part of ordinary life instead of background decoration.
A lot of his stories turn on people who feel caught between worlds. Sometimes that means Amish and English life. Sometimes it means duty and desire, or tradition and the small voice inside that says life could still change. He returns often to rumspringa, widowhood, blended families, homecoming, and the ache of wanting to belong without losing yourself. Even when the plots get dramatic, the real pull is usually emotional rather than sensational.
He has also written outside straight Amish romance. My Amish Childhood is nonfiction, while books like Worlds Apart and Chosen To Die move into more overt suspense and speculative territory. That range shows another side of him. He is comfortable writing about faith under pressure, whether the setting is a quiet buggy lane or a darker future.
Today Eicher lives in Virginia with his wife, Tina. He has spent years preaching, teaching Bible studies, and writing fiction that keeps circling back to the people and places that formed him. Even when readers disagree with a character's choices, his books usually make clear that he understands the weight behind them.
