Author bio

Jerri Chisholm writes young adult fiction about teenagers trapped inside systems that look fixed from the outside and unbearable from the inside. Before publishing novels, she followed a more conventional path, earning a master's degree in public policy, going to law school, and working as an attorney. She eventually left legal work so she could focus on writing, which had long been the more imaginative pull.

Her childhood, by her own account, was largely solitary, with her imagination and a pet parrot for company.

That career turn from law to fiction also says something about the shape of her work. Chisholm's books are full of young people who are told what their place is, then start pushing back. Rules matter in her stories, but so does the moment a character decides the rules are not enough.

Her debut novel, Escaping Eleven, arrived in 2020 and introduced Eve Hamilton, a teen fighter trying to survive a brutal underground compound. Chisholm has said the idea came to her while she was staying with family at a lakeside house and sleeping in a cool, damp basement guest room. Looking out at the beautiful water, then imagining a life even farther underground with no windows and no breeze, helped spark the story.

She has also said that Eve came to her almost fully formed, complete with the trauma that drives her and the voice that carries the book. That strong point of view is a big reason readers connect with the Eleven Trilogy, which continues in Unraveling Eleven and Ending Eleven. People often come for the dystopian setup, the class conflict, and the danger, then stay for Eve's stubbornness, her bond with Wren, and the series' steady questions about freedom, control, and what survival can cost.

Her settings may be speculative, but the pressure inside them feels very human. In the Eleven books, hierarchy shapes daily life, who eats better, who fights, who gets comfort, and who gets punished. In the Pretty Little Robots books, the pressure looks cleaner on the surface, but it is still about control, who gets assigned a future, who gets watched, and who is allowed to choose love for themselves.

Nothing stays abstract for long.

Chisholm later turned to a different kind of pressure cooker with the Pretty Little Robots trilogy, beginning with The Sordid Selection and continuing with King's Salacious Secrets and Scapegoat of Strath Glen. These books trade underground compounds for palace intrigue, but they keep her interest in power, surveillance, and lives being organized by forces that claim to know best. In Airo-Aurora, implanted microchips and a controlling Mainframe sort people into careers and matches, and Chisholm uses that setup to mix romance, conspiracy, and rebellion. The Sordid Selection was named a 2024 Independent Press Award Distinguished Favorite for Young Adult Fiction.

Another thing readers tend to notice is how consistent her themes are, even when the setting changes. She likes stories about boxed in protagonists, especially young women who have to figure out whether safety is worth obedience. Her fiction returns again and again to choice, identity, and the emotional mess that shows up when someone starts asking for more than the life they were assigned.

She still describes herself in wonderfully simple terms, as a distance runner and a chocolate addict. She lives with her husband and three children, and, at least for now, no parrot.
