Series background & context

Jeopardy Falls shifts Dani Pettrey into the Southwest, with cases that move through desert country, mountain towns, and the stark beauty of northern New Mexico. The books circle around a close-knit network of investigators, security professionals, and law enforcement friends connected to the MacLeod ranch and its wider orbit. The scenery is drier than her coastal and Alaskan series, but the danger feels just as immediate.

The opening novel, One Wrong Move, pairs security expert Christian O’Brady with insurance investigator Andi Forester after a string of Southwestern art heists turns personal. Two Seconds Too Late follows skip tracer Riley MacLeod and private investigator Greyson Chadwick as they go undercover at a luxury retreat after a woman disappears. Three Steps Behind brings FBI forensic botanist Harper Grace back to Jeopardy Falls, where Deckard MacLeod joins her in looking into a suspicious early death.

Trust is the real battleground in this series.

These books are full of people trying to outrun old mistakes, damaged reputations, or the kind of past that keeps trying to claim them. That gives the suspense a slightly different feel from Pettrey’s earlier work. The cases still move fast, but the emotional engine is often guilt, secrecy, and the slow decision to let other people in. Romantic tension grows out of that pressure, especially when partners have to work together before they are ready to be honest.

The Southwest setting gives Jeopardy Falls its own flavor. There are art crimes, luxury retreats, ranch country, remote roads, and a lot of room for predators to hide in plain sight. Pettrey leans into the contrast between big landscapes and tight personal danger. People can disappear out here, and so can evidence. That makes the investigations feel tense in a very physical way.

While each book has its own central case and couple, there is a clear sense of shared world. Side characters return, wounds linger, and the MacLeod circle keeps expanding as the series goes on. The linked novella Buried in Shadows carries that same suspense-first energy into a snowbound Colorado wedding, giving readers another second-chance romance with danger closing in from all sides.

If you want Pettrey’s newest direction, start with One Wrong Move. Jeopardy Falls keeps the faith and romance her readers expect, but adds a sharper edge of secrets, riddles, and psychological pressure.
