Series background & context

The Jenny Casey trilogy is where many readers first met Elizabeth Bear. It is near-future cyberpunk and military science fiction with a bruised heart, set in a twenty-first century shaped by climate stress, political extremism, war, artificial intelligence, and a North America that feels both familiar and badly cracked.

Jenny Casey is the center, and she is not a fresh-faced chosen one. She is a fifty-year-old former Canadian special forces soldier with a damaged cybernetic body and a long list of reasons not to trust the people who want her back. When Hammered begins, she is in Hartford, Connecticut, hiding from the Canadian government and trying to stay useful while her artificial parts fail.

Her body is the battlefield.

The first book pulls Jenny into a conflict involving government science, crime, old loyalties, artificial intelligence, and a project that may be humanity's best chance at survival. Bear gives the trilogy plenty of action, but the real force comes from Jenny's age, pain, guilt, and stubborn refusal to become just another tool.

Scardown brings her back into the Canadian military orbit she spent years avoiding. Earth is becoming less livable, and the starship Montreal may be one of the few serious answers. Jenny's rebuilt body and military experience make her valuable, but being valuable to governments and scientists has never been a safe position in this series.

Worldwired pushes the story into first contact, spaceflight, and the consequences of the choices made in the first two books. The trilogy gets larger as it goes, but it never stops caring about the people inside the machinery: Jenny, her allies, the artificial intelligences, and the damaged human networks that hold the mission together.

One of the pleasures of these books is how early-2000s cyberpunk energy mixes with Bear's interest in systems. The internet is a place of movement and danger. Bodies can be rebuilt but not made innocent. Governments can claim noble goals while doing ugly things. AIs can be strange, funny, frightening, and lonely.

The trilogy is best read in order: Hammered, Scardown, then Worldwired. It moves quickly, and the emotional weight depends on watching Jenny go from hunted veteran to one of the few people who might help humanity survive its own worst habits.
