Author bio

Jennifer Chase grew up in California, where weekly library trips with her mother turned reading into a habit early. She has said those trips mattered. Long before she was publishing thrillers, she was already making up characters, building stories, and leaning toward the darker corners of mystery.

That love of story eventually met a second fascination, the criminal mind. Chase studied police forensics, then earned a master's degree in criminology and criminal justice. She later added certifications in serial crime and criminal profiling, and she has worked as a consulting criminologist.

For her, crime fiction was never just a genre puzzle. Chase has said her academic path grew partly from curiosity and partly from personal experience with a violent psychopath. That mix of study and lived experience gave her fiction a strong sense of purpose and a clear emotional center.

It also gave her a lane that feels very much her own.

Her first novel, Compulsion, introduced Emily Stone, a vigilante investigator who hunts serial killers and child predators without a badge. The Emily Stone books, including Dead Game, Dark Mind, Dead Burn, Dark Pursuit, and Dead Cold, blend forensic detail with undercover work, danger, and a heroine who operates just outside the official system.

Chase later created Dr. Chip Palmer, the eccentric forensic expert at the center of Body of the Crime and Scene of the Crime. Those books lean harder into profiling, crime scenes, and task-force politics. They also show how much fun she has with smart investigators who do not always play nicely with procedure.

Many readers now know her best for the Detective Katie Scott series, which begins with Little Girls Sleeping. Books like Her Last Whisper, Flowers on Her Grave, The Fragile Ones, The Rose Girls, and Her Dying Kiss follow Katie through cold cases, missing girls, serial killers, and the lingering effects of military trauma. Katie's service dog, Cisco, gives the series an extra thread of loyalty and warmth without softening the danger.

Cisco often steals the scene.

Across her fiction, Chase returns again and again to missing children, broken families, old secrets, and investigators carrying wounds of their own. California is a frequent backdrop, though the stories sometimes move farther afield, and the pace stays quick. Readers who like fast thrillers often come for the suspense, but they tend to stay for the forensic angle and the recurring characters.

She has also written shorter work, including Never Forgotten and First Watch, along with a screenwriting workbook. A number of her books have picked up awards over the years. In recent years she has written from Texas after spending much of her life in California, still drawing on the same blend of crime study, field knowledge, and storyteller instinct that shaped her from the start.
