Jennifer Allison Books in Order

Jennifer Allison grew up in Saline, Michigan, a small town where, by her own telling, she spent a lot of time reading and filling notebooks with stories. That early habit of watching people closely and imagining the hidden story underneath everyday life never really left her. It eventually became the engine behind her fiction.

She didn't come to writing in a straight line.

Allison studied at the University of Michigan on a music scholarship, but music did not end up being the whole story. She found herself drawn more and more toward books, language, and the shape of a good scene. Later she earned an MFA from American University, which gave her a formal place to build the writing life she had been circling for years.

Before novels became her main work, she held a wide mix of jobs: journalist, book editor, high school English teacher, preschool teacher, waitress, piano player in a shopping mall, and assembly-line worker. Those are not glamorous details, but they are useful ones. They suggest the kind of writer she became, someone interested in voice, odd habits, family friction, and the private worlds people carry around. She wrote her first novel while living in San Francisco.

That novel was Gilda Joyce, Psychic Investigator, the start of the series most readers still connect with her name. Gilda is a funny, intense, deeply sincere thirteen-year-old who wants to solve mysteries and communicate with the dead. She is grieving her father, hanging onto his typewriter, and chasing signs from the other side, but she is also nosy, ambitious, and determined to be noticed. Gilda can be dramatic and gloriously overconfident, and that is a big part of why readers remember her.

The Gilda Joyce books went on to include The Ladies of the Lake, The Ghost Sonata, The Dead Drop, and The Bones of the Holy. Readers tend to like the mix Allison brings to them: spooky atmosphere, quick humor, family secrets, and real emotional weight. One book leans into boarding-school mystery, another into eerie music and Oxford shadows, another into spycraft in Washington, D.C. The books picked up starred reviews, and The Ladies of the Lake was nominated for an Edgar Award.

Place matters in her fiction.

A gloomy San Francisco house, a Catholic girls' school, Oxford during a piano competition, the International Spy Museum, St. Augustine before a wedding, Allison likes settings that already feel charged with history. Her stories often follow kids who do not quite fit neatly into the room they are in, but who notice more than anyone expects. Curiosity, identity, grief, family tension, and the search for truth keep showing up in different forms.

She also wrote the Iggy Loomis books for younger readers, beginning with Iggy Loomis, Superkid in Training and continuing with Iggy Loomis, a Hagfish Called Shirley. Those books trade eerie mystery for aliens, mutant powers, sibling warfare, and comic disaster. Even so, they share something with Gilda. Allison is still interested in imaginative kids, stressed families, and the havoc that starts when one person refuses to leave a mystery alone.

Allison now lives in Chicago with her husband, Michael, and their three children, Max and twins Marcus and Genevieve. Alongside her fiction, she works as a speaker, educator, and writing coach. She has said that she is at work on a new novel, which feels right for a writer whose best characters are always leaning toward the next strange door.
