Author bio

Jenifer Ruff writes dark, twisty mystery thrillers that blend psychological tension with the high stakes of medicine, technology, and crime. Her stories often begin in familiar places, then tilt slowly until an ordinary setting reveals something much more dangerous underneath.

She grew up in Northampton, Massachusetts, surrounded by old New England streets and easy access to woods and trails. Early on she was as interested in science as she was in stories, drawn to both the patterns in nature and the way people behave when those patterns are broken.

At Mount Holyoke College she studied biology, learning how tiny changes inside a cell can ripple outward through an entire body. That curiosity about cause and effect carried her to graduate work in public health and epidemiology at Yale, where she learned how outbreaks begin, how they spread, and what it takes to track them in real time.

Before turning to fiction full time, she spent years working in health care management and consulting. She helped large organizations make sense of data, systems, and risk, experience that shows up in her novels whenever a hospital goes on alert, a virus moves through a city, or a government agency scrambles to respond.

Her first novel, Everett, launched the Brooke Walton series and introduced readers to a brilliant college student whose polished exterior hides a far more unsettling interior life. Follow up books like Rothaker and The Intern keep Brooke at the center while moving her from campus to medical school to a medical examiner’s office, asking readers how far they are willing to follow a protagonist who may also be a predator.

Ruff is also known for the Agent Victoria Heslin books, a long running FBI thriller series. In titles such as The Numbers Killer, Pretty Little Girls, When They Find Us, and Ripple of Doubt, Victoria is pulled into serial murders, missing person cases, trafficking investigations, and survival scenarios that test both her training and her conscience. Pretty Little Girls earned a Reader’s Favorite International Book Award for thriller fiction, in part for the way it tackles difficult subject matter with a careful, human focus.

Her background in epidemiology powers the FBI and CDC Medical Thrillers, starting with Only Wrong Once, where an unfamiliar virus becomes a possible bioterror weapon. Later entries like Only One Cure and Only One Wave push her recurring characters, FBI agent Quinn Traynor and epidemiologist Madeline Hamilton, into scenarios involving political families, experimental toxins, and outbreaks on remote islands.

Ruff lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, with her family and a pack of retired racing greyhounds. When she is not at her desk, she is often out on the trails, hiking or running and letting plots untangle themselves in the background.

Her books are typically dark but not graphic, high on tension but low on swearing or explicit content. Readers who enjoy clean language, complex characters, and fast moving plots that still make room for small human moments tend to find themselves reaching for the next Jenifer Ruff novel as soon as they finish the last page.
