Jeff Widmer Books in Order

Jeff Widmer is a Pennsylvania native who lives in Sarasota, Florida. His work moves between crime fiction, historical fiction, and nonfiction, often with a close eye on the places where people work, argue, build new lives, and get into trouble.

His route to writing wasn't a straight line. Widmer has worked as a dishwasher, surveyor, guitarist, journalist, and marketing professional. He also spent time as a city editor at the Pocono Record and worked in public relations in Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley, experience that gave him a useful feel for deadlines, local characters, and the careful art of telling a story clearly.

Before turning to novels, he wrote nonfiction. His first book, The Spirit of Swiftwater, follows the public-health pioneers who built a vaccine laboratory in Pennsylvania and fought smallpox alongside public doubts about immunization. It shows an interest that runs through much of his work: ordinary people facing a problem that is larger than any one of them.

Fiction came later. In 2015, Widmer introduced former police officer Candace, or CW, McCoy in Peak Season. CW has left law enforcement after a shooting and taken up real estate in Spanish Point, a wealthy Gulf Coast resort town, but a kidnapping and financial scheme pull her back toward danger.

Retirement doesn't make the crimes go away.

The CW McCoy books, including Tourist in Paradise, Curb Appeal, Permanent Vacation, and Burning Man, pair mysteries with the pressures of Florida life: tourism, property, storms, coastal development, and the uneasy gap between a polished public image and what happens behind closed doors. CW is tough, imperfect, and still carrying the weight of her past while caring for her grandfather and relying on trusted allies such as Walter Bishop.

Widmer takes a darker, more comic route with the Brinker novels, Mr. Mayhem and Mr. Magic. Their former-journalist protagonist works in publicity and keeps landing in morally ugly situations involving crime, ambition, addiction, and the strange machinery of modern image-making. The books use satire, but the stakes stay personal.

His historical novel Born Under a Bad Sign returns to rural Pennsylvania in 1969, where a proposed dam, conflict over the Delaware River, and the pull of Woodstock shape the choices facing young photographer Elizabeth Reed and guitarist Hayden Quinn. Finding Woodstock, a companion collection of essays and photographs, looks back at the era and the local history behind that story.

Place matters in Widmer's books. Pennsylvania's wooded hills, the Delaware River valley, and Florida's Gulf Coast are more than backdrops. They give his characters practical problems, strong memories, and plenty to lose. Along with writing, he has kept up an interest in photography, another way of paying attention to people and places.
