As the series unfolds, the man at its center becomes more clearly identified as Jed Patrick, an Afghan war veteran, husband, and father trying to piece together who he can trust, including whether he can trust his own mind. In Kill Devil, the stakes narrow and deepen at the same time. Jed is hiding off the grid with Karen and Lilly, hoping new names and a remote cabin will buy them safety, but the Centralia Project and the people tied to it are still coming.

Setting does a lot of work here. Centralia uses the real-world unease of an abandoned mining town with an underground fire, which gives the first book a smoky, off-balance feel. Kill Devil trades that for the isolation of the Idaho wilderness, where distance from civilization makes every knock at the door worse.

Trust is always in short supply.

These books move quickly, with home invasions, hidden files, armed pursuers, and plenty of what-is-real tension, but Dellosso does not let the action float free of consequence. Jed's fight is not just about exposing a program or surviving a chase. It is about keeping his family alive, holding onto his moral center, and finding solid ground in a story built to take it away. If you like psychological suspense with conspiracy pressure, a strong family core, and a hero who is never quite sure what has been done to him, this is a tight two-book series that knows exactly what it wants to do.
