Author bio
Jeanne C Stein grew up in San Diego, California, and that city stayed with her. The sunlit streets, beach air, and borderland feel of Southern California later became the backdrop for her best-known fiction. She has long lived in Colorado, but the pull between those two places, San Diego on the page and Colorado in daily life, helps explain the grounded, modern feel of much of her work.
She spent years writing before landing her first contract. Her early breakthrough came with The Becoming, the first Anna Strong novel, which was first published in 2004 by a Colorado small press. Stein then used that book to query an agent, and the series was picked up again for a wider release by Ace. It was a very writerly kind of turning point, years of work, one opening, and then a bigger door.
Anna Strong gave her a world big enough to grow into.
In the Anna Strong books, starting with The Becoming and continuing through Blood Drive, The Watcher, Legacy, and later Blood Bond and Paradox, Stein built an urban fantasy series around a bounty hunter who becomes a vampire and refuses to go soft. Readers tend to come for the pace and the paranormal crime plotting, but they stay for Anna herself. She is tough, funny, stubborn, and always caught between the human world she knows and the supernatural one that keeps making claims on her.
That mix shows up again and again in Stein's work. She likes hidden worlds tucked inside everyday places. She likes characters with jobs to do, not just destinies to fulfill. Her stories often circle questions of loyalty, family, power, and what it costs to keep hold of your own moral center when the rules around you keep shifting.
She also wrote with a partner. Under the pen name S.J. Harper, Stein teamed up with Samantha Sommersby for the Fallen Siren books, including Cursed and Reckoning. Those novels follow Emma Monroe, an FBI agent who is also a cursed siren from Greek myth, and they let Stein play with a slightly different blend of police work, magic, and romantic tension. The partnership started after the two writers met at Comic-Con in San Diego and found they liked many of the same things, from sharp-edged fantasy to pop culture.
She didn't stay in one lane.
Alongside her novels, Stein has published short fiction and novellas, including Anna and the Vampire Prince and stories set both inside and outside her main series. She has also worked as an editor on anthology projects, and in later years branched out into collaborations such as the nautical adventure series 180 Degrees Magnetic with Jim Schoendaller and the historical novel The Last Rider with Matt Koenen. Taken together, those books show a writer who likes suspense, movement, and characters under pressure.
Stein has also been deeply involved in writing groups. She has been active with Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers, Sisters in Crime, Romance Writers of America, and Horror Writers of America. In 2008, Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers named her Writer of the Year, and Anna Strong picked up a RT Reviewers' Choice Award for Best Urban Fantasy Protagonist. She continues to be associated with Colorado's writing community, while the worlds she built, from San Diego vampires to cursed federal agents, still feel rooted in places readers can almost step into.
