Author bio
J.E. Rowney writes about people under pressure. Sometimes that pressure comes from grief, secrets, or the feeling that home is no longer safe. Sometimes it comes from a hospital ward, an exam, or a young woman trying to become the kind of midwife she has always wanted to be. Her books move between psychological suspense and character-led women's fiction, but they are usually interested in the same thing, how ordinary lives start to crack.
She spent several years in the Yorkshire hills and now lives on the south coast of England. Before turning fully to writing, she worked for ten years as a midwife, and that experience shows up clearly in her fiction. The medical details in her books feel lived in, and so do the quieter parts, the long shifts, the nerves, the self-doubt, and the strange mix of tenderness and exhaustion that comes with caring work.
That background matters.
Rowney did not come to fiction in a straight line. In an earlier career she worked in change management, and she has said that writing really took hold during train journeys between Leeds and London. Those long commutes gave her time to think, draft, and stop treating writing as something for later. She has also described the shift in simple terms, she always wanted to be a writer, then eventually realised she could just get on with being one.
Her debut novel, Charcoal, was published in 2012. It was followed by books such as Derelict, another story built around messy choices, strained relationships, and the way the past keeps pushing into the present. Readers who pick up Rowney for these earlier novels usually respond to the emotional honesty. Her characters are not spotless, and the problems they face are not tidy either. That gives even the quieter books a restless edge.
The midwife novels show another side of her work. Life Lessons, Love Lessons, Lessons Learned, and Starting Out follow Violet as she trains and then begins working as a midwife, with anxiety, friendship, and growing responsibility shaping every step. Ghosted pulls that world into something more suspenseful, mixing friendship drama, disappearance, and medical pressure. These books tend to appeal to readers who like stories about work, friendship, and confidence as much as romance or plot twists.
Then she leaned harder into suspense.
Books like Other People's Lives, Gaslight, and The Book Swap are tighter, darker, and built around mistrust. A grieving woman thinks she is being watched. A daughter returns to the childhood home where her father tormented her. A separated reader finds a cry for help hidden in a swapped book. What links them is Rowney's interest in unstable ground, the moments when someone is already vulnerable and then one more strange thing happens. She likes secrets, shifting loyalties, and characters who are not sure whether the danger is outside them, inside them, or both.
Alongside the novels, Rowney has written poetry and short fiction, and she has picked up recognition there too, including the Dinesh Allirajah Prize for Short Fiction and a Pen to Print short story award in 2020. She has also been described as an award-winning poet. These days she is based in the UK, reading widely, writing thrillers, and, by her own account, getting through plenty of coffee. There is sea air nearby now instead of Yorkshire cold, but the sharp eye for human stress has stayed the same.
