Jay Coles Books in Order

Jay Coles grew up in Indianapolis, in the Haughville neighborhood, where books and music both took hold early. He started writing poems and short stories in middle school, and by high school he was pushing himself to finish full novels. That mix of curiosity and steady practice still feels central to who he is as a writer.

Music mattered just as much. In sixth grade band, he wrote his first piece, and he later said that composing taught him to think about story in another form. He went on to build a parallel life as a composer, conductor, musician, and member of ASCAP, which helps explain why rhythm and emotional build matter so much in his fiction.

Coles moved through school fast. He was part of Vincennes University's Early College program while still attending Ben Davis University High School, then continued at Vincennes and Ball State, where he studied liberal arts and English. He once planned on becoming a teacher, and he did spend time teaching after college, another thread that fits the way he writes about teens.

One of his early novels began as a Google doc on his laptop.

He kept revising, shared pages with a mentor, started querying agents, and eventually turned that draft into Tyler Johnson Was Here. The novel follows Marvin Johnson after his twin brother is killed by police, and Coles has said it was inspired by police brutality in America and based on true events in his own life. Readers often come to the book for its urgency, but stay for Marvin's grief, loyalty, and search for justice.

His next novel, Things We Couldn't Say, shifts into a more intimate register without going easy on its characters. It follows Gio, a Black bisexual teen trying to sort out first love while the mother who left his family years earlier suddenly returns. Family hurt, identity, friendship, and forgiveness all sit close to the surface, which is a big part of why the book connects with readers.

He does not stay in one kind of story for long.

His earlier Lionheart leans into dystopian world building and superpowered rebellion, while Dead Break lets him play in the sun, surf, and mystery of the Outer Banks world. In 2025, he added Your Final Moments, a grief heavy mystery about recovery, loss, and a message from beyond the grave. Across very different plots, Coles keeps returning to young people at a breaking point, trying to decide who they are when life gets unfair or hard to name.

That through line makes sense when you look at the rest of his work life. He has taught, advocated for diverse books, and kept composing alongside his writing, so his stories often feel close to everyday teen experience even when the stakes are large. These days he lives in Muncie, Indiana, with his wife and their cat, Sage, and when he is not writing or composing, he likes playing drums in a band and video games.
