High Couch of Silistra

by Janet E Morris

1977

The Golden Sword

by Janet E Morris

Estri's gifts deepen as prophecy, desire, and the forces around Silistra tighten their hold. The sequel expands both the world and the cost of the power she carries.

The Carnelian Throne

by Janet E Morris

1979

Estri, Chayin, and Sereth move toward the foretold struggle over the Sword of Severance. The Silistra quartet closes with prophecy, divided powers, and a final reach toward light out of darkness.

Dream Dancer

by Janet E Morris

1980

Earth-born Shebat is swept into the Kerrion family's vast empire and named an heir almost on a whim. Abduction, rebellion, and power politics teach her fast what it costs to survive among rulers.

The 40-Minute War

by Janet E Morris

Washington is vaporized, panic spreads, and diplomat Marc Beck must move through the wreckage of a nuclear strike. The novel mixes political thriller pressure with the nightmare speed of catastrophe.

Cruiser Dreams

by Janet E Morris

1981

Earth Dreams

by Janet E Morris

The Kerrion Empire trilogy ends with Shebat caught between Earth, deep space, and a civilization changing faster than its rulers can control. Politics, technology, and desire all come due at once.

I, the Sun

by Janet E Morris

1983

Morris retells the life of the Hittite king Suppiluliuma as a tale of conquest, palace intrigue, and private longing. It is a historical novel that treats the ancient world like living politics, not museum glass.

Wind from the Abyss

by Janet E Morris

Famous dead collide at the entrance to a very political afterlife. Morris and Cherryh turn Hell into a crowded arena of rivalries, plots, and ancient grudges.

Angels in Hell

The series turns its eye upward as fallen powers, heavenly grudges, and damned ambitions collide. Even in Hell, the angelic question only makes politics messier.

The Warrior's Edge

by Janet E Morris

The Sacred Band

by Janet E Morris

2010

Contracts, loopholes, and infernal courtroom games take center stage. In Hell, the law is not about justice, it is about who can survive the argument.

A Man and His God

by Janet E Morris

Abarsis, slaughter priest of the war god, brings his Sacred Band to Tempus and dies in his arms. The result is a short, foundational tale about love, loss, and the birth of the Stepsons.

Rogues in Hell

by Janet E Morris

2012

Killers, tricksters, outlaws, and charming liars seize the spotlight in a rowdy anthology of underworld schemes. The series leans hard into the pleasures of bad company.

The Fish the Fighters and the Song-Girl

by Janet E Morris

This mosaic novel gathers and reframes Sacred Band tales around a dangerous northward journey. Old favorites return, new figures step forward, and the road keeps turning myth into immediate danger.

Dreamers in Hell

Satan plots, Shakespeare and Marlowe write, and the damned start dreaming of change. This volume turns the afterlife restless, theatrical, and dangerously hopeful.

Mage Blood

by Janet E Morris

Poets in Hell

Hell hosts the crookedest poetry festival imaginable. Bards, hacks, and famous dead writers compete for favor while words become weapons all over again.

Doctors in Hell

Plagues spread through the underworld, doctors raise their fees, and the Babylonian plague god walks the scene. This one mixes dark comedy with genuine menace.

Dragon Eaters

Hell Bound

by Janet E Morris

2015

Daemon Grim, Satan's bounty hunter, tracks souls and monsters across the Heroes in Hell underworld. The book leans into gothic action, infernal politics, and a hunter who works for the wrong master.

Pirates in Hell

by Janet E Morris

Hunter Caine is thrown into a kidnapping case where the line between ally and enemy keeps moving. To get out alive, she has to sort the lies fast and hit back harder.

Lovers in Hell

by Janet E Morris

2018

The damned go looking for desire, reunion, revenge, and anything that feels like love. It is a sharp, often darkly funny volume about need that never quite goes away.

Skirmishers / Shieldless

by Janet E Morris

2020

The second Heroika anthology shifts from dragon slayers to quick, lightly armed fighters. These stories favor mobility, nerve, and the kind of courage that works without heavy armor.

Mystics in Hell

by Janet E Morris

2021

Witches, visionaries, occult meddlers, and the Devil's own agents stir up fresh trouble below. The series uses mysticism here as both wonder and trap.

Liars in Hell

by Janet E Morris

2022

Everybody lies in Hell, but some lies are works of art. This volume plays with deception, performance, and the damage truth can do when nobody wants it.

Monsters in Hell

by Janet E Morris

2024

Mythic beasts and human monsters crowd the latest upheaval in the underworld. Old plot lines continue, new terrors arrive, and even Hell starts to feel unstable.

Author bio

Janet E. Morris was born in Boston on May 25, 1946, and built a writing career that never sat still for long. She wrote science fiction, fantasy, historical fiction, short stories, shared-world adventures, and nonfiction on defense and national security. That range is a big part of why her bibliography feels so different from book to book.

She began writing in 1976, and her first novel, High Couch of Silistra, arrived a year later. It launched the Silistra quartet, which went on to sell widely in paperback and became one of her signature works. The books are strange, sensual, argumentative, and very much their own thing.

She did not stay in one lane.

Readers who come to Morris through Dream Dancer and the Kerrion Empire books usually stick around for the mix of imperial politics, space opera, and a heroine who has to learn power the hard way. In those novels, the Earth-born Shebat is pulled into a sprawling interstellar dynasty where family loyalty, ambition, and technology are always colliding. Morris liked that kind of pressure cooker.

A different side of her work shows up in Beyond Sanctuary, Tempus, and The Sacred Band. Through her stories in Thieves' World and the longer novels that followed, she created Tempus and the Sacred Band of Stepsons, a hard-bitten cavalry brotherhood modeled in part on the Sacred Band of Thebes. These books mix gods, soldiers, paired loyalties, and brutal campaign life. Fans tend to love them for their intensity and for the way military detail sits right beside myth.

She liked big stakes, but she also liked systems, rituals, and the mess people make when power enters the room.

That interest in power ran through her historical fiction too. I, the Sun, her novel about the Hittite king Suppiluliuma, was praised for how seriously it took the ancient world. Morris had a knack for making old courts, old treaties, and old grudges feel immediate, as if the people involved had just stepped out of the next room.

She also collaborated often, especially with her husband, Chris Morris, whom she had known since 1965. Together they wrote books including The 40-Minute War, M.E.D.U.S.A., Tempus Unbound, and The Sacred Band, and they later co-founded Perseid Press. Morris also created and edited the shared-world series Heroes in Hell, a darkly funny afterlife setting where conquerors, poets, saints, scoundrels, and monsters keep right on scheming after death.

Her professional life outside fiction was unusual, even by science fiction standards. Morris worked as a defense analyst, wrote on military and national security topics, and became closely associated with early work on nonlethal weapons and related strategy. That practical interest in command, force, and consequences clearly fed the books, especially the ones about soldiers, intelligence, and political games.

And then there were the horses.

Morris was a lifelong equestrian. In 1996, she and Chris Morris founded the Paradise Morgans breeding program, and in later years they built a world-champion producing line in Massachusetts. She kept writing, revising older books into Author's Cut editions, mentoring writers, and publishing new work through Perseid Press until late in life. Janet Morris died on August 10, 2024, at her home in Massachusetts, leaving behind a body of work that is restless, wide-ranging, and never hard to recognize once you have spent some time in it.
