Author bio

Jane Goodger was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts, grew up in western Massachusetts, and has spent most of her adult life in New England. She has also said that marriage took her briefly to Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Naples, Italy, but New England is the landscape that keeps showing up in her work, especially its coastlines, old money, stubborn weather, and close-knit towns.

She came to fiction through journalism.

Before she published novels, Goodger worked as a reporter for years, writing for local papers and covering harder stories, including crime. That job gave her an eye for detail and for the small social rules that shape people's lives. At one point she interviewed a romance novelist and realized she wanted to try writing the kind of stories real life does not always provide, stories where people suffer, choose badly, and still get a shot at joy.

Her first published novel as Jane Goodger was When There is Hope in 1996, and it tells you a lot about what she likes to do. A woman from the 1990s wakes in 1888 Newport, Rhode Island, inside another woman's life, and has to rebuild everything from scratch. Goodger returned to that mix of time slip, emotional upheaval, and second chances in books like Memories of You and Anything for Love. Readers who enjoy historical romance with a strong dose of longing tend to remember those early books.

She clearly loves characters who have to earn their happy endings the hard way.

Much of her later work stays in historical romance, often in Victorian or nineteenth-century settings where class, money, and reputation are never just background noise. In the Christmas books, beginning with Marry Christmas, she uses holiday settings without making them too sugary. In the Lords and Ladies novels, including When a Duke Says I Do and The Spinster Bride, she leans into arranged matches, hidden feelings, and people pretending to be less vulnerable than they are.

Another good entry point is the St. Ives run of novels, from The Bad Luck Bride to The Reluctant Duchess. These books bring together jilted brides, ruined estates, buried jewels, remote manors, and wounded men who are not nearly as in control as they think. Across the board, Goodger tends to write heroines who are practical, warm, and tougher than society expects, while her heroes often arrive with grief, guilt, secrets, or all three.

She has also published contemporary romance under the name Jane Blackwood, including The Sexiest Dead Man Alive and A Hard Man Is Good to Find. Even there, you can see the same pull toward smart banter, strong attraction, and a setup that pushes two people together before either is ready.

Goodger has said she lives in Rhode Island with her husband and three children. She has also described herself as someone who works full time, runs an editing business, and writes whenever she can steal the hours. That busy, practical energy suits the books. They may have dukes, earls, and improbable twists, but they stay grounded in people who are lonely, hopeful, proud, wounded, and still reaching for a life that feels worth living.
