Author bio
Jane Ashford is the pen name of Jane Nancy LeCompte, a romance novelist whose work ranges from traditional Regency stories to contemporary romance and romantic suspense. She was born on August 20, 1948, in Eaton, Ohio, and grew up in the small-town part of the state where a good library shelf could open up a whole new world.
That happened when she was about fourteen.
Searching her local library for something different to read, she picked up Georgette Heyer’s Arabella. Ashford has said that she quickly read every Heyer novel she could find, drawn to the humor, lively dialogue, and Regency setting. That early reading helped point her toward studying English literature and traveling in Britain and Europe.
Her first novel, Gwendeline, appeared in 1980. It introduced the kind of Regency setup she would return to often: a young woman facing a difficult practical problem, a guarded gentleman, and a society full of rules that both characters must learn to navigate.
The early books include Bluestocking, Man of Honour, The Three Graces, and The Marriage Wager. They are built around London seasons, country houses, unexpected inheritances, social blunders, and marriages that begin for sensible reasons before becoming something more personal. Her heroines are often clever, independent-minded women who do not fit neatly into the role expected of them.
She has also written outside the Regency world. Under the name Jane LeCompte, Moon Passage follows two women connected by the same unfaithful man, while Sistren turns toward family history, grief, and secrets between sisters. Her contemporary novels Cachet and Mirage add murder, danger, and the pressures of public life to the emotional stakes.
Ashford’s later historical romances brought her back to the connected characters and family dynamics that suit her particularly well. Heir to the Duke begins The Duke’s Sons, following the children of the Duke of Langford. The Way to a Lord’s Heart centers on men carrying grief and the women who help them make a future again. The Duke’s Estates moves through a web of friends, neighbors, families, and inherited properties.
Kindness matters in these books.
Her couples may argue, make poor assumptions, or get pulled into a mystery, but the stories keep returning to the question of whether two people can see each other clearly and build a life that works for both of them. There is room for intrigue, awkward family gatherings, eccentric relatives, and a little farce along the way.
LeCompte has lived in Boston, Los Angeles, and New York, and has been based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Her books have reached readers in several countries and she has written under both of her names for more than four decades. The through line is simple: a fondness for romance with warmth, wit, and people who get a second chance to be fully themselves.
