Sussex Tales

by Jan Edwards

2014

Jan Edwards evokes farming childhood in rural Sussex during the 1950s and 1960s through interlinked tales. Country recipes, traditional wines, local dialect, and folklore accompany anecdotes about animals, mishaps, and the rhythms of village life.

Fourteen ghost stories draw on folklore, family history, and vividly imagined places and periods. Including Otterburn and a previously unpublished tale, the collection explores unsettling encounters in which familiar settings conceal disturbances that gradually reveal their darker implications.

Fables and Fabrications

by Jan Edwards

2016

Fourteen tales and accompanying verse explore mysterious encounters with shape changers, ancient spirits, and inscrutable cats. Moving from Norway's Arctic landscapes to a fairground, these collected horror and dark fantasy stories unsettle familiar assumptions about what surrounds their characters.

Winter Downs

In snowbound Sussex in January 1940, Bunch Courtney discovers Jonathan Frampton's body in a woodland clearing. Suspecting murder rather than suicide, she tries to persuade Chief Inspector Wright to investigate while the community prepares for possible invasion.

In Her Defence

Bunch Courtney witnesses a Dutch refugee's death, then learns a friend's father has died in similar circumstances. As wartime internments intensify in 1940, she joins Chief Inspector Wright to investigate suspected poisonings and prevent another killing.

Listed Dead

In Cases of Murder

by Jan Edwards

Deadly Plot

by Jan Edwards

2024

A body unearthed in Wyncombe's Victory Gardens draws Bunch Courtney into the apparent death of an escaped prisoner of war. Her investigation reveals connections extending beyond Sussex, and an increasing body count turns an old mystery urgent.

A Party to Murder

by Jan Edwards

Rose Courtney's father hopes a society party will distract her from detective work. Instead, a naval officer's murder and a stolen Faberge egg draw her back to DCI Wright as they search for an endangered witness.

New

DCI William Wright joins the hunt for a military intelligence officer's kidnapped daughter. With demands extending beyond ransom, he must find the girl before her captors kill her; the volume also includes another Wright story.
