Author bio

James Rollins (born August 20, 1961) is the pen name of James Paul Czajkowski, an American novelist who likes to collide big science questions with old mysteries—and then see what survives. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up in Ballwin, Missouri, outside St. Louis.

He studied at the University of Missouri and earned a doctorate in veterinary medicine in 1985. After school he moved to Sacramento, California, opened a veterinary practice, and spent years treating animals by day while still daydreaming about caves, ruins, and the strange corners of the natural world.

For a long time, writing was something he squeezed in between appointments.

Rollins has often pointed to classic adventure stories as early fuel—writers like Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, plus the kind of pulp cliffhangers that teach you how to end a chapter at exactly the wrong moment. He began drafting novels while still practicing, and a turning point came when he took a manuscript to a writers’ conference, entered a contest, and came home with an agent.

His first published novel was the epic fantasy Wit'ch Fire, released under the name James Clemens, and it grew into the five-book Banned and the Banished sequence. Those novels lean into prophecies, blood magic, and a band-of-companions quest across a kingdom under siege, with each book widening the map and raising the stakes.

He kept the Clemens name for his fantasy worlds.

Under the James Rollins name, he pivoted toward contemporary adventure thrillers like Subterranean and Excavation—stories that start with a scientific or archaeological discovery and then sprint into survival mode. He’s a longtime spelunker and a certified scuba diver, and that hands-on love of extreme places shows up on the page: under polar ice, inside flooded tunnels, and in jungles where the rules of nature feel slightly different.

In 2004 he launched his signature series with Sandstorm, introducing Sigma Force, a covert unit tied to DARPA. Led in the field by Gray Pierce and guided by director Painter Crowe, Sigma tackles threats that start as a mystery and end as a global emergency—plagues, lost technologies, and ancient riddles with modern consequences. Later entries like The Doomsday Key, The Seventh Plague, and Kingdom of Bones keep that same recipe: a real-world question, a dangerous answer, and a race to keep the wrong people from turning it into leverage. Between series entries, he’s also published stand-alone thrill rides such as Amazonia, Ice Hunt, and Altar of Eden, each built around a single unsettling “what if?” and an unforgiving setting.

He’s also written spin-offs and collaborations that expand the sandbox, including the Tucker Wayne adventures (with Tucker’s military working dog, Kane) and the supernatural thrillers of The Order of the Sanguines with Rebecca Cantrell. A lot of the shorter Sigma stories and character spotlights have been gathered in Unrestricted Access.

More recently, Rollins returned to secondary-world fantasy with the Moon Fall books, beginning with The Starless Crown. He lives in the Sierra Nevada, and his years as a veterinarian still show in the way his stories treat biology as both wonder and threat: living systems adapt, mutate, and fight back when pushed.
