Jacob Stone Books in Order

Jacob Stone is the pen name Dave Zeltserman uses for his Morris Brick thrillers. Born in Boston in 1959, he has spent much of his career writing crime, horror, mystery, and suspense that moves fast but never forgets character. Under either name, his books tend to ask what happens when decent people crack, or when bad people convince themselves they still have one last plan.

Before fiction became the main job, Zeltserman worked for about twenty-five years as a software engineer, much of that time building network management software. He started writing novels during breaks between projects, partly to stay sane and partly because the urge had gotten too loud to ignore. In 1992 he wrote Fast Lane, the first novel he would eventually publish.

Nothing about the start was quick.

It took eleven years for Fast Lane to sell, and he kept going through rejections, layoffs, and long stretches of balancing books with tech work. After a layoff in 2003, he wrote Small Crimes, one of the novels that helped change his career. Around the same period he also wrote Outsourced, drawing on the anxieties of working life and the feeling that a stable profession can vanish faster than people expect.

Because he broke in later, he came to publication with a backlog. That helps explain why his work can feel so wide-ranging: hardboiled crime, private-eye stories, horror, prison noir, and straight thrillers all sitting close together on the shelf. The common thread is pressure. He likes stories where people are cornered and every bad option has a cost.

He has said he was an avid crime and mystery reader as a teenager, and that discovering writers like Jim Thompson helped him loosen up and trust a darker, less rigid style. You can feel that in books such as Small Crimes, Pariah, and Killer, which are lean, tough, and deeply interested in guilt, punishment, and self-deception. In The Caretaker of Lorne Field and Monster, he pushes further into horror, but the pull is similar: dread, consequence, and people making choices they cannot undo.

He likes pressure-cooker stories.

Recognition followed. His Julius Katz mysteries won both the Shamus and Derringer awards, and his short fiction has twice won the Ellery Queen Readers Award. Small Crimes was later adapted for film, giving one of his bleakest books a second life on screen. By the time he created the Morris Brick series, he already had a reputation for tight plotting, dark humor, and a willingness to sit close to damaged minds without turning them into cartoons.

The Jacob Stone byline came later, when his publisher wanted a separate name for the Morris Brick books. Zeltserman has said he liked the simplicity of "Stone," and the way it paired with his hero's surname, Brick. Under that name he wrote Deranged, Crazed, Malicious, Cruel, and Unleashed, five Los Angeles thrillers about an ex-LAPD serial-killer hunter and the team around him.

He has long been based in the Boston area with his wife, Judy, and he has talked about writing from a home office that looks out on trees. He also studies martial arts, and that practical knowledge shows up in the way violence works in his fiction. It is rarely glamorous, and that is part of why the books land. Whether the cover says Dave Zeltserman or Jacob Stone, readers come for the same things: sharp plots, troubled people, and the feeling that trouble is always only a few bad decisions away.
