The supporting cast helps, and Knopf wisely keeps it close. Sam is never far away, sometimes as backup, sometimes as ballast. Jackie also leans on her boyfriend Harry Goodlander, local lawman Joe Sullivan, and computer wizard Randall Dodge. Because she is a lawyer, people bring her problems before they even know they are crimes. That gives the books a slightly different angle from a standard detective series. Jackie is not roaming around looking for mystery. Mystery walks into her office, calls her at bad hours, or lands in her lap.

The Hamptons setting still matters a lot. These books enjoy the contrast between big houses and scruffy year-round life, between social polish and total chaos. They are also a bit funnier than the Sam novels. The stakes are real, and people do get hurt, but Jackie brings a comic snap to the page that keeps things lively even when the plot gets dark.
