Running a marina in a small coastal town means he sees life at dock level, where bills are immediate and failure is public. That makes a nice contrast with the elite world behind the stolen paintings, where wealth can hide bad behavior for decades. Vonnegut uses that contrast well. The series has some of the financial edge of his earlier thrillers, but it also picks up an art-heist mood, a touch of caper energy, and a more blue-collar sense of risk.

What should you expect from Jack Legare? Fast plotting, sharp talk, and danger that keeps rising as curiosity turns into knowledge. Jack is not polished, and that helps. He is good at noticing what does not fit, whether that is a crooked story, a vain billionaire, or a supposedly impossible trail.
