Jack Kenny is an old-school Bronx detective built out of stubbornness, habit, and decades inside the NYPD. He believes in hunches, interviews, and the value of knowing how people lie to your face. That makes him a natural fit for a traditional police novel, but Coleman also uses him to look at something messier: what happens when police loyalty collides with the buried sins of the department itself.

In Bronx Requiem, Kenny is paired with Carmen Romero, a younger and more tech-savvy detective. The contrast is part of the fun. Kenny trusts instinct and street sense. Romero trusts data, systems, and a newer way of policing. Together they work a cold case that reaches back thirty years and threatens to expose things the NYPD would rather keep sealed.

This is less private-eye fiction than institutional crime novel.

The setting is the Bronx, but just as important is the culture of the job: Irish Catholic cop families, old favors, unsolved shame, and the way a department can protect itself even when the cost is truth.
