Author bio

Born in Yate, England, J.K. Rowling has an origin story that is almost as famous as the characters she created. The spark for her career didn't happen at a desk or in a library, but on a delayed train journey from Manchester to London in 1990. She didn't have a working pen with her, so she sat and let the idea bubble in her mind for four hours. By the time she pulled into King's Cross station, the concept of a scrawny, black-haired boy wizard who didn't know he was special was fully formed.

The next few years of her life were challenging, yet they were crucial for the story she was building. While navigating the loss of her mother, moving to Portugal to teach English, and eventually returning to the UK as a single mother, she kept writing. She famously spent much of this time working in Edinburgh cafes, writing with one hand while rocking her daughter’s stroller with the other. During this period, she wasn't just writing the first book; she was mapping out the plot for the entire seven-book series.

Her debut novel finally hit the shelves in 1997. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (published in the US as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone) introduced readers to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It also introduced the world to Harry, Ron, and Hermione, a trio of friends destined to face the dark wizard Voldemort.

The series became an instant classic.

As the books continued, the stories grew up alongside their readers. What started as whimsical children’s adventures evolved into complex, high-stakes fantasies. The later books tackled heavy themes like loss, prejudice, and the difficulty of doing the right thing. The release of each new installment became a global event, with families queuing outside bookstores at midnight just to get their hands on the next chapter.

After bringing Harry’s story to a close, Rowling decided to shift gears. She wanted to explore different genres and themes, moving away from magic to write fiction for adults. Her first post-Potter novel was The Casual Vacancy, a tragicomedy about local politics and class divides in a small English town.

Following that, she did something surprising. She wanted to write crime fiction without the hype and pressure attached to her famous name. She released a gritty mystery novel called The Cuckoo’s Calling under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. The book received strong reviews on its own merit before her true identity was revealed. Since then, the Cormoran Strike series has become a major success. These books follow a private detective and his business partner, Robin Ellacott, solving twisted crimes in modern London.

Rowling has also returned to the world of children’s literature. She published The Ickabog, a fairy tale she originally wrote for her own children and kept in her attic for years, and The Christmas Pig, a story about a boy searching for his lost toy.

She continues to expand her wizarding world through screenplays for the Fantastic Beasts films, which explore magical history long before Harry was born. Whether she is writing about wizards, detectives, or fairy tales, she remains a storyteller who knows exactly how to capture an audience.
