Author bio
J. Brent Bill was born in Columbus, Ohio, in 1951. He grew up in the evangelical Friends tradition and has spent much of his life working within the wide, varied world of Quaker faith. His books often begin with an ordinary question: How do we pay attention, make a decision, sit quietly, or live our beliefs when real life gets messy?
Before becoming known for books on Quaker spirituality, Bill worked in ministry and community life. He served as a local church pastor, a denominational executive, a seminary faculty member, and, at one point, a go-cart track operator. That last job fits his writing better than it might seem. His work has a practical streak, and he tends to meet readers where they are rather than pretending life is neat and orderly.
Writing came into focus for him while he was studying at Earlham. A debate with a teacher about the value of rock and roll led to a challenge: put those arguments into a book. Bill did, and Rock and Roll: Proceed with Caution became an early success. He later wrote books for young people, including Lunch Is My Favorite Subject, Crusin' and Choosin', and The Secret Junior High Survival Manual.
His education includes Wilmington College and the Earlham School of Religion. He became a recorded minister in the Religious Society of Friends in 1980, and his experience has included pastoral work in both Ohio and Indiana, teaching, retreat leadership, writing coaching, and work supporting Quaker meetings and worship groups.
Then came the books that introduced many readers to Quaker practice.
In Holy Silence, Bill explains why silence is more than an absence of sound in Quaker worship. It can be a way of listening, waiting, and becoming more awake to God and other people. Mind the Light takes up another central Quaker idea, the Inner Light, and asks readers to look more closely at creation, their own lives, and the people around them.
His later books keep that same grounded approach. Sacred Compass looks at spiritual discernment, especially how people can test a sense of calling rather than simply follow impulse. In Awaken Your Senses, written with Beth A. Booram, he invites readers to use sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell as paths toward wonder and prayer. With Jennie Isbell, he wrote Finding God in the Verbs, a guide for people who want their prayers to sound less automatic and more honest.
Bill also writes openly about the gap between ideals and practice. Life Lessons from a Bad Quaker uses humor and personal stumbles to explore simplicity, peace, integrity, community, and care for the earth. Beauty, Truth, Life, and Love returns to the question of what an abundant life might really mean, while Hope and Witness in Dangerous Times connects Quaker faith with public action, discernment, and hope.
His work makes room for both contemplation and action.
Bill lives with his wife on Ploughshares Farm in rural Indiana, on land being restored with native hardwoods and prairie grasses. He is also a photographer, and the natural world shows up again and again in his writing, not as decoration, but as a place to slow down, notice what is in front of us, and begin again.
