Series background & context

It’s A Kind of Maragic is a four-part fantasy arc that starts like a traditional fairy tale and then grows into a bigger, moodier saga. The early chapters are approachable for younger readers, but the story steadily leans older as the mysteries widen and the consequences start to land. If you’re here for the full ride, the clean reading order is It’s A Kind Of Maragic: Part 1 through Part 4.

The series is set in a hidden world of small creatures with big politics, where pollen, metamorphosis, and survival aren’t just background details, they’re the rules of life. Belliza, once a dragonfly queen, is transformed into the first butterfly, and her bond with Bramley, a bee, becomes the emotional anchor of the opening. Their story eventually passes to Bree, Belliza’s daughter, who carries the Maragic, the first true magic, in ways she doesn’t fully understand.

The magic here feels alive.

It’s A Kind Of Maragic: Part 1 establishes the myth. You meet the twin sisters who once ruled the skies, Belliza and Sindeena, and you see how jealousy and a shattered living pollen crystal set the whole chain in motion. The book keeps a fairy-tale simplicity on the surface, but it’s already planting questions about what Maragic is, who gets to control it, and what happens when nature’s power wakes up.

In It’s A Kind Of Maragic: Part 2, the story opens up underground. Bree is separated from safety and pulled into a forgotten underworld tied to the Haltija, the first creators of Maragic. Guided by an unlikely helper, she starts piecing together truths her mother couldn’t fully explain, while enemies like Sindeena and other hunters move aboveground, looking for a way to take the Maragic for themselves.

Part 3 and Part 4 push the arc into its most dangerous stretch, with Bree and her friends forced to face loss, betrayal, and the long-telegraphed clash that’s been building since the beginning. The scope widens beyond the insect realm, and the human world starts to feel closer, raising the question of what Maragic wants, and what it might do if it gets what it’s been waiting for. Every step forward changes Bree, and the world.

One helpful bit of context: the opening story was first published under the Butterfly Bee Lady titles before being re-edited and expanded into the Maragic arc. Expect fast chapters, creature characters with memorable names, and a steady mix of humour, heart, and genuine stakes. The books are also closely linked to the author’s illustrations, especially in the early parts, which helps keep the world clear even as the lore gets deeper.
