Author bio

Irina Shapiro was born in Moscow and spent her early childhood in Russia before emigrating to the United States with her family when she was eleven, trading Soviet apartment blocks for the streets of New York.

Books were her bridge into her new language. She devoured historical romance, gothic tales, and anything with a whisper of mystery, picking up English quickly and thriving as an honors student even while adjusting to a very different culture.

After high school she stayed in the city and studied at Bernard M. Baruch College, earning a degree in International Business and Marketing in 1992. Office life came next: first a stint in advertising, then a move into import and export, where she eventually became an import manager at a large textile company.

In 2007 she left that career to focus on her autistic son, expecting a quieter, more domestic season of life. Instead, the space and silence made room for stories. Characters started “talking” to her, scenes played out in her head, and she finally sat down at the keyboard to see if she could finish a novel.

She had always loved history and the uncanny, especially the idea of reincarnation and lives that echo across centuries, so it is no accident that her breakthrough time travel novel The Hands of Time grew from those obsessions. A real-life account of a woman who developed vivid memories after a head injury convinced her that past lives could be fertile ground for fiction, and time-slip stories quickly became her home territory.

In the Hands of Time series she follows Valerie Crane and her sister Louisa as they are flung between modern life and the early seventeenth century, weaving together domestic drama, romance, political plots, and the shock of waking up in another era. The later Wonderland books pick up that thread in a new way, sending modern location scout Neve Ashley through a hidden passage in Everly Manor and straight into the chaos surrounding the Monmouth Rebellion.

Shapiro also writes deeply researched historical mysteries. The Echoes from the Past novels center on archaeologist and TV presenter Quinn Allenby, whose psychic gift lets her see the lives behind the bones she studies, while the long-running Redmond and Haze Mysteries follow American surgeon Jason Redmond and parish constable Daniel Haze as they investigate strange deaths in Victorian England. More recently, the Tate and Bell Mysteries and Nicole Rayburn Historical Mysteries have added new detectives, new time periods, and new corners of history to explore.

Alongside these series she has written psychological thrillers and standalones such as The Lost Colony, The House on the Hill, Haunted Ground, After Midnight, and The Invite, which lean into locked-room tension, remote settings, and slow revelations about who can be trusted when the lights go out.

Today she lives in New Jersey with her husband and two children, still happiest when she can disappear into an archive, a crumbling ruin, or a forgotten scandal and imagine the people who once stood there. When she is not drafting, she is often roaming old cemeteries or scribbling notes for the next mystery in a café, chasing the small details that make another time feel real.

Her books keep circling the same quiet question: how do love, loyalty, and fear travel across centuries, and what happens when the past refuses to stay buried?
