Series background & context
InterWorld is a young adult science-fiction and fantasy trilogy about Joey Harker, a teenager whose poor sense of direction conceals an extraordinary ability. He can walk between alternate worlds. Neil Gaiman and Michael Reaves created the opening novel, with Mallory Reaves joining the later books. The series turns a familiar coming-of-age problem into a multiverse adventure: Joey must decide where he belongs while discovering that many other versions of himself have already faced that same question in very different circumstances.
The first book, InterWorld, begins when Joey gets lost and steps out of his own reality. What looks like a mistake reveals that his Earth is only one among a vast number of alternatives. His ability makes him valuable to rival powers associated with magic and science, both of which want to control travel between dimensions. He is not simply a tourist who can retreat after seeing something strange. The discovery changes his place in a conflict that was already being fought before he knew other worlds existed.
His most unusual allies are other Joeys.
InterWorld gathers versions of him from different realities into a force resisting domination by either side. That premise gives the team a shared identity without making its members interchangeable. Alternate worlds have produced people whose experiences and forms differ, even when they have something fundamental in common. Joey’s challenge is therefore not only learning new skills. He must work with people who are both familiar and unfamiliar, and recognize that belonging to a group does not remove the need to earn trust or accept responsibility for others.
The Silver Dream continues his involvement in that wider struggle, while Eternity’s Wheel brings increasing pressure to take a leading role. With the threat of FrostNight approaching, Joey seeks more Walkers across the Altiverse and trains them as quickly as possible. The young man who began by stumbling into another dimension now has people looking to him for direction. Building a team becomes part of survival, but it cannot guarantee readiness for every enemy. The series develops from discovering a hidden ability toward deciding how to use it when others depend on the result.
Read InterWorld, The Silver Dream, and Eternity’s Wheel in that order. The books follow a continuing hero and conflict, so later adventures build on earlier discoveries and relationships. The tone is fast-moving young adult adventure, blending magical opposition with science-fiction ideas about parallel realities. Readers interested in alternate selves will find that concept tied to practical questions of teamwork and choice. Joey has many possible counterparts, but he still has to make his own decisions about courage, loyalty, and the life he wants to lead.
