Inspektor Kimmel Books in Order

With Inspektor Felix Kimmel, John Brady leaves Dublin and heads into southern Austria, but he keeps the same interest in how crime grows out of place, history, and local silence. Poacher's Road is the only Kimmel novel, and it reads like a series opener built around a small-town officer who knows too much about the ground under his feet and not enough about the forces moving across it.

Felix is a Gendarmerie officer in a remote mountain district. He is not the glamorous detective sent in from the capital. He is the local man, which is exactly why he matters when two bodies turn up in the woods. The Kripo from Graz take over, yet they still need his knowledge of the roads, farms, families, and habits of the region. That outsider-insider tension drives the book. Felix belongs to the place, but belonging does not mean safety.

This is a mountain crime novel with a long memory.

The setting does a lot of work here. These valleys have histories of smuggling, hunting, border movement, and war. Brady treats the landscape as something lived in, not postcard pretty. Narrow roads, isolated farmhouses, steep woods, and hard weather all add pressure. The murders point beyond the district, toward Eastern European crime and the unsettled aftermath of the Balkan wars. So the story is always balancing two scales at once, the local and the continental, the family secret and the modern criminal network.

Felix is also pulled inward. As the case widens to include arson and older political shadows, he starts finding disturbing links to his own family story. Hidden maps, the reputation of his grandfather, and the sense that the past was never properly buried make the investigation personal in a way he did not choose. That is one of Brady's favorite moves as a writer. A murder case opens a door, and once the door is open, a whole community's memory starts shifting.

The tone is patient, uneasy, and observant. Poacher's Road is not a cozy village mystery, even though it cares deeply about village life. It is closer to a rural European police novel where every path has history on it and every conversation carries a little suspicion. Even as a one-book series, Kimmel is an intriguing character to spend time with if you like mysteries where geography, politics, and inheritance matter as much as clues.
