Inspector Benedict Devlin is called to a boarding house where Brooklyn Harris, once jailed for killing his teenage girlfriend, has been stabbed to death. 2009

At the opening of a new gold mine in Donegal, a controversial American politician is attacked and Inspector Devlin is blamed for the security failure. Days later an illegal immigrant is murdered near the border. Following the trail, Devlin uncovers a people smuggling ring and begins to suspect the mine is a front for something far more dangerous than mining.

5

Gallows Lane

by Brian McGilloway

2008

A notorious ex con, James Kerr, returns to Devlin’s patch declaring he has found God, and Devlin is ordered to keep him away from trouble. When a young woman is beaten to death on a building site and then Kerr himself is found crucified, Devlin juggles office politics, family pressures and spiralling violence as he hunts a killer determined to settle old scores.

6

Borderlands

by Brian McGilloway

2007

The body of teenager Angela Cashell is discovered on the Tyrone Donegal border, wearing a stranger’s gold ring and lying beside an old photograph. Inspector Benedict Devlin’s search for her killer leads from small town bars to remote farms and across the border, linking the new murder to the long ago disappearance of a prostitute and suspicions inside his own force.

Series background & context

Inspector Benedict Devlin is at the heart of Brian McGilloway’s long running borderland series. Devlin is a Garda inspector based in Donegal, working the territories where the Republic of Ireland meets Northern Ireland, and the line on the map rarely matches the way people actually live.

The books open with Borderlands, when the body of a local teenager is found on the Tyrone Donegal border. Devlin’s hunt for her killer takes him across jurisdictions and into old cases the authorities would rather forget. In Gallows Lane, he is told to keep an eye on a notorious ex con who has supposedly found religion, just as a young woman is killed and vigilante style violence starts to unsettle the community.

Later novels push Devlin into bigger, messier territory while keeping his home life in view. Bleed a River Deep ties an attack on a visiting American politician to a new gold mine, illegal immigration and cross border trafficking. The Rising begins with a drug dealer found in a burned out barn and introduces a shadowy anti drug group, even as the disappearance of a colleague’s teenage son pulls Devlin into a more personal search.

In The Nameless Dead, Devlin works alongside a commission tasked with locating the Disappeared, the victims of past political violence whose bodies were hidden for decades. A dig on a small island uncovers the remains of babies as well as an old informer, and Devlin is told he is not allowed to investigate what looks like murder. His decision to follow his conscience, even when the law says stand back, drives the book.

Blood Ties brings him a case that feels like a ghost story. A man who once served time for killing his teenage girlfriend is found murdered, and forensics link fresh blood on the body to the girl who supposedly died years before. As Devlin digs into online grooming, vigilante justice and old grief, he also has to face the decline of his own father’s health.

Across the series, Devlin is a working detective, a husband and a father rather than a larger than life maverick. He worries about his children, argues with his superiors and makes mistakes, but he keeps trying to steer a steady moral course in a landscape where politics, religion and crime overlap.

The border itself is almost another character. Smugglers, former paramilitaries and everyday commuters cross it daily, and each book explores how that invisible line can both hide and expose wrongdoing. You can read the novels as standalone mysteries, but following them in order lets you watch Devlin, his family and his patch of countryside change over time.
