Innocents at War Books in Order

Innocents at War follows Tommy Stark, an Anglo-American pilot who joins the young Royal Flying Corps as the First World War approaches. At first, military flying still has the air of a dangerous club for gentlemen and enthusiasts. That illusion does not last.

The series begins with When Empires Collide. Tommy trains, earns his wings, thinks often of Grace, the squire’s daughter he has known since childhood, and is sent to France as the war expands. The personal thread with Grace gives him something steady while the air war grows more deadly around him.

The machines are fragile. So are the boys flying them.

Wareham uses Tommy’s career to show the Royal Flying Corps changing from amateur experiment to professional fighting force. The early pilots are drawn largely from the Army and Navy, and many still carry old ideas about class, sport, and gentlemanly conduct. The war strips those ideas away as casualties rise and the machines become more capable of killing.

The series has action, but its real subject is forced maturity. Tommy has to grow up while friends die, tactics change, and senior officers struggle to understand the new weapon they are using. His affection for Grace becomes a quiet counterweight to the violence and uncertainty of the Front.

Start with When Empires Collide and read on through A Deadly Caper, No Longer A Game, Dark Days Of Summer, Bursting Balloons, and A Wretched Victory. The arc works best as a full wartime progression, from early enthusiasm to the knowledge that modern war has changed everyone involved.
