Series background & context

Innocent No More follows Thomas Stark, the son of Tommy Stark from Innocents at War. The earlier generation learned to fly in the Great War. Thomas comes of age in the years before the Second World War, when everyone can see another disaster forming and almost nobody agrees what to do about it.

The series begins with The Gathering Clouds. Thomas has seen combat in Spain and witnessed what modern air war can do. He joins the RAF with hard experience that many peacetime professionals would rather ignore. That tension between men who know war and men who know procedure runs through the books.

Then the fighting starts for real.

Wareham follows Thomas through the Battle of Britain, the fall of France’s lessons, the strain of command, and the ugly politics inside air forces that are learning too slowly. Later the story moves to Australia, Singapore, Syria, and Papua New Guinea, where Thomas has to rebuild himself as much as his command.

The series title matters. These characters are not wide-eyed for long. They learn that courage is not enough, that senior officers can be dangerous fools, and that new aircraft mean little without training, maintenance, and clear thinking. Thomas is capable and often right, but being right does not make him popular.

This is a direct sequel in spirit to Innocents at War, though it can be read on its own. Start with The Gathering Clouds, then read The Breaking Storm and Heat of Autumn to see Thomas move from warning signs into the first great pressure of war. The later books are best saved until you know why he has so little patience left.
