The Inheritance of Magic books return to modern London, but the hidden world works very differently from Alex Verus. Here the magic system is called drucraft, and in theory anyone can learn it. In practice, real power depends on access to a scarce resource that can only be taken from a limited number of special places, so the people who control those places end up controlling magic too.

That puts money and class at the center of the series. The drucraft world is dominated by old Houses and wealthy corporations, and most ordinary people never get a fair shot. Stephen Oakwood lives right on that edge. He has talent, ambition, and good instincts, but not the money, training, or connections that would make any of it easy.

Stephen is a strong lead for this setup because his goals are concrete and human-sized. He wants to pay his bills, look after his cat, learn more magic, and find his missing father. When contact with House Ashford pulls him deeper into the hidden world, those modest aims turn risky very quickly, because every relative, employer, mentor, and rival seems to have an agenda of their own.

The books balance training and action with a longer struggle over family and power. Stephen keeps building his skills, especially through sigls and hands-on practice, but the real tension comes from the fact that knowledge is hoarded and every step forward has a social cost. He is never learning magic in a vacuum. He is learning how power is bought, inherited, traded, and defended.

As the series develops through An Inheritance of Magic, An Instruction in Shadow, and A Judgement of Powers, Stephen's search for his father opens into a larger conflict involving the Ashfords, the mysterious Winged, and the question of what his own gift really means. Alliances are useful but rarely clean, and much of the suspense comes from Stephen trying to grow stronger without becoming someone else's tool.

This is contemporary fantasy with practical magic, hard limits, class pressure, and a hero who has to claw his way upward step by step.
