by Adam Silvera

2020

Series background & context

The Infinity Cycle is an urban fantasy series set in a version of New York where magic lives out in the open, but nobody agrees on what to do with it. Some people, called celestials, are born with powers linked to the stars. Others become specters by stealing magic from endangered creatures like phoenixes, a process that leaves bodies and damaged ecosystems behind. Between them stand the Spell Walkers, a vigilante group trying to protect magical people and creatures from exploitation.

At the heart of that conflict are brothers Emil and Brighton Rey. They grew up idolising the Spell Walkers, following every battle and protest, and hoping they might someday manifest powers of their own. Emil mostly wants peace and a quiet life, while Brighton runs a video channel that chases views and hero moments. On the night everything changes, a specter attack forces Emil to reveal an impossible new ability, phoenix fire that marks him as something the city has never seen before.

Infinity Son follows the brothers as they move into the orbit of the Spell Walkers and the legendary phoenix Gravesend. Emil grapples with a shocking family secret and the weight of being treated as a prophesied savior, even though he never asked for that role. Brighton, still powerless, leans harder into fame, pushing his brother toward risks that might keep the spotlight on them and away from their enemies. The book lays out a tangled world of rival gangs, activist groups, and political players who see Emil as a tool.

In Infinity Reaper, the stakes rise when Brighton drinks the Reaper's Blood elixir, hoping to become unkillable and instead finding that the potion is destroying him from the inside. Emil races to create an antidote that could both save his brother and strip specters of their stolen powers, all while the Spell Walkers splinter over tactics and revenge. Ness, a shapeshifter tied to both brothers, is manipulated by his father, Senator Iron, whose anti magic agenda turns the broader public against celestials.

Infinity Kings closes the trilogy with open war. Brighton has gathered a devoted following and is hunting an ancient scythe said to kill even the unkillable, while Emil has to step into leadership despite the toll his magic takes on him. Around them, allies like Maribelle and Ness run dangerous missions that cut through political campaigns, underground prisons, and phoenix sanctuaries. The brothers' feud is personal, but its outcome will decide the future of magic in their city.

Readers can expect fast paced street battles, social media drama, queer romance, and a lot of moral grey areas about what justice looks like. The series works best read in order from Infinity Son through Infinity Kings, since each book picks up directly after the last and keeps layering secrets, betrayals, and shifting alliances.
