Series background & context
The India Black series follows Chyna Black's daughter into her own messy, high-stakes love story. India grows up with a front-row seat to her mother's heartbreak, and that history shapes the way she sees men, love, and risk. She is guarded before life gives her another reason to be.
While We're Young, co-written with Pancho Rucker, introduces India at seventeen. She has been the good girl: good grades, no drugs, no drinking, no sex, and no real interest in handing someone her heart. Then she meets Baby, an older, dangerous, magnetic man who represents almost everything Chyna warned her about.
India wants to be careful. India also wants to feel free.
The later books move her into darker territory. In Dream, India is older, grieving the death of her first love, cut off financially by her mother, and trying to survive in Philadelphia as a college student and bottle girl. Then she meets Keanu Dessalines Baptiste, known as Dream, a powerful man tied to the Baptiste crime family. Their chemistry is immediate, but both of them bring trauma, pride, and family dysfunction into the room.
It Was All a Dream continues the India and Dream story, asking whether they can hold onto love while the outside world keeps pressing in. The series works as a next-generation branch of the Chyna Black world. It carries Ervin's familiar themes, guarded hearts, dangerous men, family pressure, and women trying to choose themselves, but it gives them to a daughter who thinks she knows better until life starts teaching her otherwise.
