Series background & context

In the Shadows Security takes the wider Dirty Angels world and shifts it toward military romance and protection work. The series follows a crew of former Special Forces and other elite operators who now work private security, using the skills that once kept them alive in war zones on civilian assignments that turn personal fast.

These men know how to survive. Intimacy is harder.

That tension drives the whole series. In Mercy, a scarred former Delta Force operator has to protect Parris, a therapist and witness to a horrific crime. Ryder puts a hardheaded ex-Ranger against Kelsea, a woman spiraling after brutal truths about her family. Hunter mixes investigation and protection when a search for a missing man leads to Frankie, who is hiding from a violent past. Walker leans into second chances. Steel adds a female MMA fighter and a stalker. Brick turns undercover domestic life into its own kind of battlefield.

The setup gives Jeanne St James a lot to work with. Every book can bring in a new assignment, a new city, or a new immediate threat, but the team itself stays constant. That creates the same sense of brotherhood that powers her MC books, just in a different uniform. There is banter, protective instinct, shared damage, and the quiet understanding of men who have all seen things they cannot fully explain to outsiders.

Because it spins off from Dirty Angels, the series also carries emotional history from that world. Club families, old connections, and shared secondary characters keep the books from feeling detached. Readers who know Shadow Valley get extra context, but newcomers can still follow the protection plots and romances without getting lost.

Tone-wise, these books sit in a nice middle ground. They are action-heavy, but not all grit. The jobs are dangerous, yet the bigger draw is watching men trained to control everything slowly lose control in very human ways. Jeanne St James is especially good here at pairing tough heroes with women who do not simply need saving, they push back, make demands, and force the heroes to change.

If you like bodyguard romance, military backgrounds, and found-family teams with a continuing bond, In the Shadows Security is one of her easiest series to recommend. It has danger, healing, and enough connection to the MC books to satisfy readers who want the larger universe too.
