Cara Fleming is a Chicago detective with a hard past, and when someone torches her apartment to derail an investigation, she is forced back into the shadowy street life she thought she had left behind. Bryan O'Shaugnessy, an Episcopal priest on the south side, gets drawn into her orbit through his church's soup kitchen. That combination gives the series its tensest blend of danger, compassion, and unexpected romance.

What links these books is not one continuing couple but one continuing question: what does faith look like after the moment that changes everything? John answers it through firefighters, paramedics, police officers, and people who keep finding themselves exposed when life speeds up. The tone is faster and more suspenseful than in some of her small town fiction, but it still comes back to the same core interests, love, trust, vulnerability, and the long work of letting other people in.
