Baby, It's Cold Outside

by Corinne Michaels

2022

A Chicago Christmas gets off to a miserable start with heartbreak, freezing weather, and a tree jammed in an apartment doorway. Then one unexpected man turns a very bad holiday into something much warmer.

Series background & context

Imperfect Match is a little different from most entries connected to Corinne Michaels because it is a co-written novel with Melanie Harlow and it stands on its own. There is no long family saga to catch up on and no multi-book suspense thread to track. What you get instead is a focused, playful friends-to-lovers story with a strong rom-com setup.

The hook is simple and very effective. A professional matchmaker is supposed to help other people find love, not accidentally fall for her client, especially when that client is also her best friend. That gives the book an easy source of tension right away. Every scene has the added complication that the heroine knows exactly what she should do and keeps wanting the opposite.

It is lighter on its feet than some Michaels novels.

That lighter tone is part of the appeal. The book leans into longing, chemistry, and the kind of emotional chaos that comes from trying to act practical while feelings get more obvious by the minute. Because the central pair already know each other well, the story does not need to waste time manufacturing a connection. The connection is there from the start. The real question is how long they can pretend it is not.

You can also feel the blend of two romance writers in the style. Michaels' taste for emotional stakes is still present, but the book has the bright, flirty, everyday warmth that fits Harlow's work too. That makes it a nice gateway if you enjoy either author and want to see them meet in the middle.

If your favorite part of romance is watching a friendship tip into something much more dangerous and much more honest, this book is a good pick. It is sexy, funny, and built around the delicious frustration of two people who are clearly wrong only in the sense that they should have admitted they were right for each other much sooner.
