Series background & context

Mary B. Morrison's If I Can't Have You trilogy begins with a wager between friends and follows the damage as it spreads through their relationships. Loretta Lovelace wants to end her involvement with Granville, who refuses to accept that their connection is over. Her friend Madison believes she knows how to handle any man. What starts as a challenge becomes a problem involving obsession, marriage and the wealth that gives some characters room to protect themselves.

In If I Can't Have You, Loretta dares Madison to prove that she can control Granville. Madison is already engaged to Chicago DuBois, a wealthy Houston businessman, so accepting the challenge risks a relationship she has reasons to preserve. Granville's behavior makes the stakes much higher than either woman initially treats them. Attraction and confidence do not provide control over someone else's actions, and the wager draws more people into a situation that is becoming increasingly dangerous.

A private bet does not stay between two friends.

I'd Rather Be with You develops the consequences through Loretta's growing involvement with Chicago. Caring for him gives her a chance to form a closer bond at a moment when his marriage is under pressure. Madison is unwilling to surrender her place, and her efforts to recover it combine romantic jealousy with concern for what the relationship provides. The two women's friendship becomes increasingly difficult to separate from their competition. Granville remains part of the danger, keeping the earlier decision active even as other relationships change.

The final novel, If You Don't Know Me, brings Sindy Singleton into the contest over Chicago's future. She wants him for herself and looks for ways to expose Madison's deceptions, including help from one of his enemies. Madison responds with plans of her own, using family ties and Chicago's sense of responsibility to preserve access to the DuBois fortune. Each character sees the situation differently, but their actions repeatedly turn affection into a struggle for advantage. More scheming creates more reasons to distrust what anyone says.

Winning someone's attention is different from earning their trust.

The trilogy combines explicit romance with the pace and conflict of a relationship drama. Stalking adds a threat beyond ordinary jealousy, while money makes the question of who stays with whom more complicated. Morrison follows the fallout across three connected novels, so publication order offers the clearest route: If I Can't Have You, I'd Rather Be with You and If You Don't Know Me. The appeal lies in watching ambitions collide and seeing how one reckless choice can reshape the lives of people who never agreed to the original bet.
