Series background & context

I Am Just Junco is JA Huss at her most openly science fiction, and it is big in every direction. The series begins with Junco Coot, a nineteen-year-old sniper who has been lied to by just about everyone in her life. She thinks she understands her world, until death, betrayal, and a winged alien named Tier rip the whole thing open.

From there, the scope gets large fast. Earth is only one piece of the story. There is Amelia, avian genetics, prophecy, military control, artificial intelligence, old wars, and a sense that Junco is tied to something much older and stranger than she ever imagined. The books move through action, revelation, and some genuinely bleak choices while never losing sight of Junco's voice.

That voice matters. Junco is not a soft, endlessly patient heroine. She is angry, funny, violent, exhausted, and often working with incomplete information. That makes the series feel sharper and rougher than a lot of romantic science fiction. When the emotional bonds do matter, whether with Tier or the larger team around her, they land because the world is so hostile.

This is the epic branch of Huss's catalog.

If you like layered world-building, morally difficult decisions, prophecy with teeth, and heroines who survive by fighting first and sorting out their feelings later, this is worth your time. The series has been gathered into omnibus editions now, but however you read it, the best approach is still the same: start at the beginning and let the world keep unfolding.
