Series background & context

The Hunger Makes the Wolf books, also known as the Ghost Wolves series, are science-fiction westerns set on Tanegawa's World, a harsh desert planet controlled by TransRift Inc. The company holds a monopoly on interstellar travel, which gives it enormous power over a place that is far from any meaningful oversight. Its mines keep the planet working, but most of the people doing that work see little reward and even less freedom.

At the center is Hob Ravani. As a child, she was left behind by a rift ship and taken in by Nick Ravani, leader of the Ghost Wolves, a mercenary biker crew. Hob has grown up tough, loyal, and used to the uneasy bargains needed to survive on a company world. She also has unusual powers that connect her to the stranger parts of the planet.

The trouble has been building for a long time.

In Hunger Makes the Wolf, a death in Hob's adopted family and the disappearance of a young relative pull the Ghost Wolves into a conflict with TransRift and the mysterious Weathermen. The investigation leads Hob across the desert and toward secrets buried in the planet's mining economy. There are fast bikes, train jobs, odd creatures, and plenty of danger, but the emotional core is Hob's loyalty to her people.

The series treats the company town as a real pressure cooker. TransRift controls work, transport, and access to necessities, while miners and local communities carry the cost. Hob and her friends are not polished heroes with endless resources. They are people trying to protect one another while deciding when survival has to become resistance.

Blood Binds the Pack widens that fight. The Ghost Wolves are no longer simply a crew for hire, and Hob's friend Mag takes a larger role among the miners as TransRift pushes harder to exploit the world's strange blue mineral. The books keep their rough-and-ready space-western energy, while making room for questions about organizing, trust, and the price of taking a stand.

Expect a gritty, action-forward story with magic sitting beside machinery, chosen family beside old grudges, and a desert landscape that never lets anyone forget how vulnerable they are. Start with Hunger Makes the Wolf, then move straight into Blood Binds the Pack for the full arc.
