Author bio
Hugh Pentecost was the pen name of Judson Pentecost Philips, an American mystery writer who kept working, experimenting, and turning out stories for more than six decades. He was born on August 10, 1903, in Northfield, Massachusetts, and grew up in a theatrical family. His father sang opera, and his mother was an actress.
Philips spent time traveling in Europe and the United States before earning his degree from Columbia University in 1925. Writing arrived early. While still a student, he sold his first story, "Room 23," to a magazine called Flynn's. Soon afterward he worked as a reporter for the New York Tribune, while building a second career by selling fiction to magazines.
The pulp era gave him a practical education in getting a story moving.
During the 1920s and 1930s, Philips wrote suspense tales, sports fiction, plays, and newspaper columns. His work appeared in a wide range of magazines, and he learned to create a sharp setup, a lively cast, and a reason to turn the page. His first book, Hold 'Em Girls! The Intelligent Women's Guide to Men and Football, appeared in 1936.
A few years later, he adopted the Hugh Pentecost name for Cancelled in Red. The 1939 mystery, built around fraud and murder in the stamp-collecting trade, introduced Inspector Luke Bradley and helped launch Philips's long run as a novelist. He also wrote under his own name and as Philip Owen, producing more than one hundred mystery and detective novels altogether.
He liked putting crime in places with their own rules and social pressures. In the Pierre Chambrun books, a polished hotel manager protects the Beaumont, a grand New York hotel where wealthy guests bring private feuds through the front door. The Julian Quist novels follow a public-relations man among the powerful and well connected, while John Jericho is a large, red-bearded Greenwich Village painter who cannot ignore injustice.
People matter as much as puzzles in these books.
Philips also returned often to smaller New England communities, where old grievances and public respectability can hide real danger. His Uncle George stories feature retired prosecutor George Crowder, and the earlier Dr. John Smith tales use a criminal psychologist's insight into troubled minds. Whatever the setting, the stories tend to ask who has been hurt, who is lying, and who will take responsibility.
Outside fiction, Philips was deeply involved in community life in Connecticut. He helped establish the Sharon Playhouse and worked there as a producer and adviser. He also edited a local newspaper, wrote political commentary and reviews, and later hosted a radio program about life in Connecticut's Northwest Corner.
In 1973, Mystery Writers of America named him a Grand Master. Even as his eyesight and health declined late in life, he continued to write every day. Philips died on March 7, 1989, leaving behind a large, varied shelf of compact mysteries, pulp-era thrillers, and series investigations.
