Howl Books in Order

The Howl series is a mystery series told from a point of view readers do not get very often, the dogs'. Its central character is Taser, a black Labrador who has had a hard life and does not take his new home for granted. He now lives with his owner, Robert, in an upscale Scottsdale, Arizona neighborhood, alongside his friend Meatloaf. A safe bed, regular meals, and a dependable person mean everything to him.

Then a murder threatens the neighborhood.

Taser has a very practical reason to care. His earlier life included time in a county dog pound, and the thought of Robert moving away or losing control of their home is frightening. So when trouble puts the people around him at risk, Taser works with Meatloaf and the local dogs to figure out what is happening. Protecting the humans is also a way of protecting the pack.

The books use the limits of a dog's understanding as part of the mystery. Taser can observe smells, sounds, habits, moods, and small changes that people miss, but human language and motives do not always make sense to him. Readers see crimes, arguments, and danger from a low-to-the-ground perspective, with clues filtered through canine logic. That makes room for humor, but the stakes are real. The series includes violence, adult situations, and threats that can come from people as well as other animals.

Scottsdale matters to the stories. Its polished neighborhoods sit close to desert country, and the dogs' world stretches from backyards and houses to coyotes, open land, and other hazards outside the gate. Taser gradually becomes an important figure among the neighborhood dogs, a leader who feels responsible for keeping his companions safe even when he is unsure of the larger human problem.

The series begins with A Howl in the Night. A Howl at Midnight revisits that first story in a PG version for younger readers. From there, books such as The Twilight Howl, A Howl for Help, Howling through Darkness, and Howl of the Wild return to Taser, Meatloaf, and the pack for new mysteries.

It is a dog story, but it is not only a dog story.

Expect a mix of neighborhood suspense, pack politics, loyalty, and a playful take on what dogs may make of human behavior. The order is worth following because Taser's need for security, his role in the pack, and the relationships around him build from book to book. Start with A Howl in the Night for the original adult-oriented introduction, or choose A Howl at Midnight if the younger-reader adaptation is the better fit.
