Series background & context

Horseshoe Trilogies follows Josie Grace and three horses she has grown up with at her family's riding school: Faith, Hope, and Charity. When the stables have to close, the family must find new homes for them. Josie is deeply attached to all three, but loving them means thinking carefully about who can look after each one. That search gives the series its opening problem and its emotional centre.

The horses have different needs, so a suitable home cannot mean the same thing in every case. Faith is an elderly mare who has been part of Josie's life for years. Hope is dependable but plain-looking, which makes Josie worry about whether people will value her. Charity is especially dear to her. Their differences make the rehoming stories personal: Josie is trying to protect individual animals she knows, not simply clear a stable before the family moves on.

Leaving the riding school does not end Josie's connection with the horses.

Keeping Faith, Last Hope, and Sweet Charity introduce the first stage of that change. Faith needs a gentle owner, Hope needs someone who sees beyond appearances, and Charity's disappearance creates another worry during the search for homes. The stories are linked by Josie's situation, but each horse brings its own concerns. Together they show why placing an animal with a new owner can be a complicated decision, even when everyone agrees that a move is necessary.

The later trilogies continue Josie's involvement with the horses and the people who care for them. Visits and new problems let those relationships develop beyond the initial separation. In Leap of Faith, a visiting rider's attempt to prove herself leads to a fall and raises a question about the difference between loving horses and wanting to look impressive in the saddle. Charity's Gift brings an orphaned foal into Josie's life, making care a practical task as well as a feeling.

The tone is realistic children's horse fiction, with friendship, responsibility, and adjustment to change running through the books. Riding matters, but so do an animal's temperament, age, and everyday care. The linked trilogies give the series a broader shape than one competition or one rescue: Josie first faces the loss of a familiar home, then finds ways to remain connected to the horses in their new circumstances. The strongest place to begin is Keeping Faith, where the closure of the stables establishes what she stands to lose and why finding the right owners matters so much to her.
