Series background & context

The Honeymoon novels by James Patterson and Howard Roughan center on FBI agent John O'Hara and investigations in which intimate relationships become a source of danger. The titles suggest holidays and celebrations, but the stories turn those familiar hopes into uncertainty. Courtship, marriage and trust all matter to the cases. O'Hara's job is to look past appearances, even when his own feelings make that harder than a routine investigation would be.

In Honeymoon, Nora Sinclair appears to have everything: a successful career, confidence, style and the ability to attract men. Yet disturbing events keep occurring around her, particularly around the men in her life. The FBI's interest places O'Hara close to a woman whose public charm does not answer the questions raised by her past. He has to discover what lies behind the gaps and contradictions in that carefully presented life.

His attraction to Nora makes the investigation more dangerous.

The first book builds suspense through the tension between O'Hara's professional purpose and his personal involvement. Getting closer may help him understand her, but it also gives her more influence over his judgment. The question is therefore larger than whether he can collect evidence. He must recognize when fascination is interfering with the work he is supposed to do. The novel's attention to Nora as well as O'Hara lets the reader experience the pursuit from more than one direction.

Second Honeymoon gives O'Hara a different kind of case. Newlyweds are being targeted, including a couple in a hotel sauna and another preparing to board a honeymoon flight. Places associated with comfort and anticipation become crime scenes, and the apparent randomness makes the next victims difficult to predict. Special Agent Sarah Brubaker is investigating another serial killer at the same time. As the two agents work more closely together, they seek the logic behind separate campaigns of violence before more people die.

The link between the books is O'Hara and a recurring concern with what people hide inside relationships. Nora's appeal and the vulnerability of honeymooning couples produce different plots, but both challenge the assumption that love or celebration guarantees safety. The tone is adult suspense, with murder, deception and sexual attraction shaping the action. Start with Honeymoon to meet O'Hara and see how his judgment is tested, then continue to Second Honeymoon. Reading them in that order gives the returning investigator context while allowing the second novel's new crimes to remain a mystery of their own.
